Removal & Installation



The Axle Housing is also referred to as a Driveline Module by this manufacturer. Halfshafts connect to the driveline module and to the rear wheels.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear tires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid from the rear driveline module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Driveshaft, removal & installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right side sway bar nut, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left side sway bar nut, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Roll the sway bar, if equipped, down and out of the way.
  16.  
  17. Remove the left side stay bracket bolts (2).
  18.  
  19. Remove the right side stay bracket bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the exhaust system up to the catalytic converter.
  22.  
  23. Support the rear driveline module with a transmission jack.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rear bolt at the driveline module.
  26.  
  27. Remove the two side bolts (1) at the driveline module (3).

  29. Lower the driveline module enough to gain access to the electrical connector and bracket.
  30.  
  31. Remove the routing bracket bolt.
  32.  
  33. Unplug the electrical connector.
  34.  
  35. Remove the breather hose off of the Electronically Controlled Clutch (ECC).
  36.  
  37. Lower the driveline module (1).
  38.  
  39. Disengage both halfshafts.
  40.  
  41. Remove the driveline module.
  42.  
  43. Remove the ECC bolts.
  44.  
  45. Separate the ECC from the rear axle driveline module.

To install:

  1. Install the ECC to the rear axle driveline module.
  2.  
  3. Install the ECC bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Lift the driveline module (1) with a transmission jack (3) while installing both axles.
  6.  
  7. Connect the breather hose to ECC.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Install the wire harness bracket and 2 mounting bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Lift the driveline module (1) into place.
  14.  
  15. Install the 2 driveline module side mounting bolts (1) and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the one rear driveline module mounting bolt (1) and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the right side stay bracket and tighten the bolts (1) to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the left side stay bracket and tighten the bolts (1) to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Driveshaft, removal & installation.
  24.  
  25. Fill the rear axle with the proper amount and type of fluid.
  26.  
  27. Roll the sway bar into place, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Install left side sway bar nut, if equipped, and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install right side sway bar nut, if equipped, and tighten to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the exhaust.
  34.  
  35. Install the wheels and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
