CV-Joints



CV-Boots Inspection
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Check the driveshaft boots for damage and deterioration:

    Raise the front of the vehicle
     
    Rotate the axle and inspect for cracked or ripped CV boot material on the inner and outer CV-joints. Repeat this step on both sides of the vehicle.
     
    Inspect for excessive grease deposits on or around the CV boot

  5. Replace the boot if it is damaged or deteriorated.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Drain the fluid from the rear differential, also called the rear driveline module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to Driveshaft, removal & installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sway bar connecting nuts and roll the sway bar down and out of the way, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left and right rear halfshaft stay bracket bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the exhaust system up to the catalytic converter.
  16.  
  17. Support the rear differential module with a suitable jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear bolt supporting the rear differential module.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 side bolts supporting the rear differential module.

  23. Using the jack, lower the differential module enough to gain access to the electrical connector and bracket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the routing bracket bolt and unplug the electrical connector.
  26.  
  27. Remove the breather hose from the Electronic Control Clutch (ECC).
  28.  
  29. Lower the rear axle assembly.
  30.  
  31. Disengage the axle shaft.
  32.  
  33. Remove the nut and washer connecting the halfshaft to the rear hub.
  34.  
  35. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    If the halfshaft is hard to remove, use a punch and hammer to tap it out.

To install:

  1. Lift the rear axle assembly as the halfshaft is being installed.
  2.  
  3. Install the breather hose to the ECC.
  4.  
  5. Install the nut and washer connecting halfshaft to the left rear hub and tighten to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connector, route the wiring harness into the bracket. Tighten the bracket bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Lift the rear axle assembly completely into place.
  10.  
  11. Install the 2 differential module side bolts and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear differential module rear bolt and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the halfshaft stay bracket and tighten the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the driveshaft.
  18.  
  19. Refill the rear differential module to the correct level.
  20.  
  21. If equipped, roll the sway bar into place and tighten the nuts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install any exhaust components removed.
  24.  
  25. Install the wheel and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
