Removal & Installation



Lower Control Arm

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Hold the stabilizer bar link lower stud stationary and remove the nut securing the link to the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower strut assembly nut and bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stay brace.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt securing the lower control arm to the trailing arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt securing the lower control arm to the crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm to crossmember, install the nut and bolt, but do not tighten.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower control arm to the trailing arm, install the nut and bolt, but do not tighten.
  4.  
  5. Install the stay brace on the crossmember and tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the mounting bolt holding the strut assembly to the lower control arm, but do not tighten.
    NOTE
    When attaching a stabilizer bar link to the lower control arm it is important that the lower mounting stud be positioned properly. The lower mounting stud on the right side link needs to point toward the rear of the vehicle when inserted through the lower control arm mounting flange. The left side link lower stud needs to point toward the front of the vehicle.

  9. Connect the stabilizer bar links to the lower control arm and tighten the nut to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheel and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the lower control arm mounting bolt nut at the crossmember to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Tighten the lower control arm mounting bolt nut at the trailing link to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Tighten the strut assembly lower mounting bolt nut to 73 ft. lbs. (99 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Check and adjust the alignment as necessary.
  22.  

Toe Link

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt that secures the toe link to the trailing arm.

  7. Matchmark the position of the cam bolt on the crossmember.
  8.  
  9. While holding the cam bolt head stationary, remove the toe link mounting cam bolt nut and washer. Remove the cam bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the toe link.
  12.  

To install:


WARNING
When installing the cam bolt and washer make sure the cams stay inside the abutments built into the crossmember. Failure to do so can damage the abutments and make toe adjustment difficult.

  1. Install the toe link into position. Install the cam bolt from the front through crossmember and link. Match the cam to the marks made during the removal process. Only hand-tighten the nut at this time.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolt that secures the toe link to the trailing arm. It may be necessary to flex the trailing arm body mount bushing inward or outward using a suitable pry tool. Do not tighten the bolt at this time.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the toe link mounting bolt at the trailing arm to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the alignment as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Once the rear toe is set, hold the cam bolt head stationary, and tighten the toe link cam mounting bolt nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  12.  

Trailing Arm

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws that secures the brake hose to the trailing arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut that secures the brake line routing bracket to the trailing arm. Remove the brake line from the routing bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake caliper and adapter as an assembly. Secure the caliper assembly out of the way. For additional information, refer to the following section, Brake Caliper, removal & installation.
    WARNING
    Do not let the caliper assembly hang by the brake hose as damage could occur.

  13. If equipped, remove the wheel speed sensor. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor, removal & installation.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Wheel Hub and Bearing (sealed unit), removal & installation.
  18.  
  19. Remove the parking brake cable from the lever of the parking brake shoe.
  20.  
  21. Remove the hair pin securing the parking brake cable to the brake support plate.

  23. Slide the brake support plate with parking brake shoes off the end of the parking brake cable and remove.
  24.  
  25. Pull the parking brake cable from the trailing arm.
  26.  
  27. Remove the bolt securing the lower control arm to the trailing arm.
  28.  
  29. Remove the bolt securing the upper control arm to the trailing arm.

  31. Remove the bolts holding the leading end of the trailing arm to the body and remove the trailing arm.

To install:

  1. Position the trailing arm and install the 2 bolts holding the leading end of the trailing arm to the body. Tighten the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the upper control arm to the trailing arm and tighten the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm to the trailing arm and tighten the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the bolt securing the toe link to the trailing arm. It may be necessary to flex the trailing arm body mount bushing inward or outward using a suitable pry tool. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Insert the parking brake cable through the trailing link from the inboard side.
  10.  
  11. Slide the parking brake cable into the brake support plate with parking brake shoes.
  12.  
  13. Install the hair pin securing the parking brake cable to the brake support plate.
  14.  
  15. Attach the parking brake cable onto the lever on the parking brake shoe.
  16.  
  17. Install the wheel speed sensor, if equipped.
  18.  
  19. Install the hub and bearing. Refer to Wheel Hub and Bearing (sealed unit), removal & installation.
  20.  
  21. Install the brake rotor.
  22.  
  23. Install the caliper assembly and tighten the mounting bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Position the brake line on the trailing arm, inserting the routing clip and routing bracket over the welded stud. Tighten the nut on the welded stud to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Position the brake hose on the trailing arm bracket and tighten the mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the rear wheel and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Check and adjust the alignment, as necessary.

Upper Control Arm

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt securing the upper control arm to the trailing arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt securing the upper control arm to the crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper control arm.

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm and install the bolt securing the arm to the crossmember, but do not tighten.
  2.  
  3. Install bolt securing the upper control arm to the trailing arm, but do not tighten.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear wheel and tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the upper control arm mounting bolt at the crossmember to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the upper control arm mounting bolt at the trailing arm to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Check and adjust the alignment as necessary.
