- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
If the rotating tape (wire coil) in the clockspring is not positioned properly with the steering wheel and the front wheels, the clockspring may fail. The following procedure MUST BE USED to center the clockspring if it is not known to be properly positioned, or if the front wheels were moved from the straight ahead position.
Position steering wheel and front wheels straight-ahead.
CAUTIONBefore servicing the steering column the airbag system must be disarmed.
WARNINGAll fasteners must be torqued to specification to ensure proper operation of the steering column.
- Position the front wheels straight-ahead.
- Fully extend or pull out adjustable steering column.
- Disconnect the negative (ground) cable from the battery.
From behind the steering wheel, remove the two screw covers and screws to the driver airbag.
WARNINGDo not pull on the horn switch feed pigtail wire to disengage the connector from the driver-s airbag or to disconnect the horn switch to steering wheel wire harness connection. Improper pulling on this pigtail wire or connection can result in damage to the horn switch membrane or feed circuit.
- Carefully pull airbag rearward just far enough to disconnect the two airbag squib connectors and the horn connector.
Separate driver airbag from steering column.
NOTEThe driver-s airbag trim cover is available for service separately. If the horn switch is faulty or the trim cover is damaged, the airbag cushion assembly may be transferred to a new trim cover. If the airbag is defective, the entire driver airbag and driver airbag trim cover must be replaced as an assembly.
- Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt, then slide the steering wheel off the shaft.
- Remove at least one clockspring screw. This will help keep the clockspring from un-centering itself.
- Back out the set screw through the access hole in the bottom of the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).
- Pull the SCCM off the steering column shaft.
- Remove the three clockspring screws.
- Carefully pull straight up on clockspring to remove.
- The clockspring can rotate approximately 5 3 / 4 turns from lock to lock. To be properly centered, rotate the clockspring rotor clockwise until the rotor stops. Do not apply excessive force.
- From the end of travel, rotate the rotor counterclockwise two turns and then keep going a little more until the wires end up on the right side of the column shaft (at the 3 o-clock position).
- Tighten the set screw securing the SCCM.
- Tighten clockspring screws that were backed out to keep the clockspring from unwinding.
- Align the spline on the steering wheel hub to shaft and install the steering wheel.
- Install a NEW retaining bolt. Torque the bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
- Install the driver-s airbag.
- Connect the negative battery cable. If equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the steering angle sensor must be calibrated.
Install the steering column control module.
CAUTIONDo not connect the negative battery cable. Personal injury or death may result if the following system test is not performed properly:
- With the negative battery cable disconnected, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position, then exit vehicle with the scan tool.
- After checking that no one is inside the vehicle, connect the battery negative remote terminal.
- Read and record the ACTIVE Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) data.
- Read and record any STORED DTCs.
- Refer to the proper diagnostic information if any DTCs are found in Step 4 and Step 5.
- If the airbag warning lamp either fails to light, or goes ON and stays ON, there is a system malfunction.
- Position driver airbag in steering wheel near mounting location.
- Connect the two airbag squib connectors and the horn connector.
- Position the driver-s airbag mounting screws into the driver airbag. From behind the steering wheel install the two screws to the driver airbag. Torque the two screws to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
