Removal & Installation



2.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove hood.
  4.  
  5. Release fuel pressure.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect negative battery cable located in the trunk.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove air cleaner housing assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect lines from power steering pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove power steering pump attaching bolts and set pump aside.
  18.  
  19. Recover air conditioning system using a suitable refrigerant recovery machine.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the wire harness connector from the air conditioning compressor clutch coil connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the nuts that secure the air conditioning suction line and air conditioning discharge line to the air conditioning compressor.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the suction and discharge lines from the air conditioning compressor and remove and discard the dual plane seals.
  26.  
  27. Install plugs in, or tape over all of the opened refrigerant line fittings and the compressor ports.
  28.  
  29. Raise and support the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front end splash shield.
  32.  
  33. Remove the bolts that secure the automatic transmission cooler line bracket and the air conditioning compressor to the cylinder block.

  35. Position the cooler lines out of the way and remove the air conditioning compressor from the engine compartment.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect air conditioning compressor electrical connectors.
  38.  
  39. Remove air conditioning compressor.
  40.  
  41. Raise vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Remove lower splash shield bolts and remove splash shield.
  44.  
  45. Drain cooling system.
  46.  
  47. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect down stream oxygen sensor connectors.
  50.  
  51. Disconnect exhaust pipes at the manifolds.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect starter electrical connectors.
  54.  
  55. Remove starter bolts and set starter aside.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect coolant pipe near starter from hose.
  58.  
  59. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor electrical connector and remove sensor.
  60.  
  61. Disconnect ground strap.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  64.  
  65. Remove 4 engine mount nuts.
  66.  
  67. Remove engine mount studs from mount.
  68.  
  69. Remove steering gear mounting bolts and lower steering gear for clearance.
  70.  
  71. Using a block of wood and a suitable lifting device under the oil pan, raise the engine.
  72.  
  73. Remove structural collar bolts.
  74.  
  75. Remove structural collar.
  76.  
  77. Remove lower bell housing bolts.
  78.  
  79. Lower engine and remove jackstand.
  80.  
  81. Mark flex plate to torque converter location.
  82.  
  83. Remove torque converter bolts.
  84.  
  85. Lower vehicle.
  86.  
  87. Remove wiper arms.
  88.  
  89. Remove wiper cowl.
  90.  
  91. Remove strut tower support.
  92.  
  93. Reposition purge solenoid.
  94.  
  95. Remove the intake manifold
  96.  
  97. Disconnect all vacuum lines and electrical connectors.
  98.  
  99. Disconnect all ground straps attaching to the engine.
  100.  
  101. Disconnect fuel line at fuel rail.
  102.  
  103. Disconnect coil, injector, capacitor, and knock sensor connectors.
  104.  
  105. Remove purge solenoid from bracket.
  106.  
  107. Remove the bolts from the EGR tube to exhaust manifold.
  108.  
  109. Remove the lower tube bolts to EGR valve and remove tube.
  110.  
  111. Remove upper tube bolts to EGR valve.
  112.  
  113. Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts.
  114.  
  115. Remove valve from vehicle. Clean mounting surface.
  116.  
  117. Remove upper bellhousing bolts and reposition electrical harness.
  118.  
  119. Attach lifting tool 8342A.
  120.  
  121. Support transmission with a block of wood and floor jack.
  122.  
  123. Hoist engine from engine compartment.
  124.

  1. Attach special tool #8342A engine lifting fixture.
  2.  
  3. Lower engine into engine compartment.
  4.  
  5. Remove special tool #8342A.
    WARNING
    Do not tighten the transmission case to engine block bolts until all bolts have been hand started, and the two mating surfaces are completely joined together, as damage to cylinder block or transmission could occur.

  6.  
  7. Install bellhousing to cylinder block bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install EGR valve.
  10.  
  11. Install the EGR valve mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Inspect rubber silicone seals on intake manifold end of EGR tube.
  14.  
  15. Install upper tube into the intake manifold, being careful that the silicone rubber seals are correctly installed and undamaged.
  16.  
  17. Install new gasket between the EGR valve and upper tube and install bolts.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower tube to exhaust manifold.
  20.  
  21. Install new gasket between the EGR valve and lower tube and install bolts.
  22.  
  23. Tighten the lower tube to EGR valve bolts to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm) torque.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the lower tube to exhaust manifold bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm) torque.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the upper tube to EGR valve bolts to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm) torque.
  28.  
  29. Tighten EGR valve to cylinder head bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm) torque.
  30.  
  31. Connect the electrical connector to EGR valve and lock.
  32.  
  33. Relocate the purge solenoid.
  34.  
  35. Install purge solenoid to bracket.
  36.  
  37. Connect coil, injector, capacitor, and knock sensor connectors.
  38.  
  39. Connect the fuel line.
  40.  
  41. Install upper intake manifold.
  42.  
  43. Install purge solenoid.
  44.  
  45. Connect all ground straps.
  46.  
  47. Connect all vacuum lines and electrical connectors.
  48.  
  49. Raise vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Align flexplate and torque converter.
    NOTE
    Make sure all four bolts are installed finger tight before torquing bolts.

  52.  
  53. Tighten torque converter bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  54.  
  55. Using a block of wood and a suitable lifting device under the oil pan, raise the engine.
  56.  
  57. Install the structural collar and position in place.
    NOTE
    Make sure that structural collar is flush with the oil pan and the transmission bell housing.

  58.  
  59. Finger tighten all bolts.
  60.  
  61. Tighten the structural collar to oil pan bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  62.  
  63. Tighten structural collar to transmission bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  64.  
  65. Align power steering pump with mounting holes on engine bracket.
  66.  
  67. Install three pump mounting bolts through access holes in pulley and engine bracket. Tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) torque.
    NOTE
    Always use a NEW O-ring on the end of the pressure hose.

  68.  
  69. Lubricate NEW O-ring on end of pressure hose with clean power steering fluid.
  70.  
  71. Install pressure hose to pump. Tighten pressure hose tube nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) torque.
  72.  
  73. Install supply hose on pump. Install clamp securing hose in place.
  74.  
  75. Install serpentine drive belt.
  76.  
  77. Install air cleaner housing and inlet tube.
    NOTE
    Be certain to check the refrigerant oil level if the air conditioning compressor is being replaced. Use only refrigerant oil of the type recommended for the air conditioning compressor in the vehicle.

  79. Position the air conditioning compressor into the engine compartment.
  80.  
  81. Install the bolts that secure the air conditioning compressor and the automatic transmission cooler line bracket to the cylinder block. Tighten the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  82.  
  83. Install the front end splash shields.
  84.  
  85. Lower the vehicle.
  86.  
  87. Remove the tape or plugs from the opened fittings on the air conditioning suction line and the air conditioning discharge line and the compressor ports.
  88.  
  89. Lubricate the new dual plane seals with clean refrigerant oil and install them onto the suction and the discharge line fittings. Use only the specified seals as they are made of a special material for the R-134a system. Use only refrigerant oil of the type recommended for the air conditioning compressor in the vehicle.
  90.  
  91. Install the suction and discharge lines onto the air conditioning compressor.
  92.  
  93. Install the nuts that secure the suction and discharge lines to the air conditioning compressor. Tighten the nuts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  94.  
  95. Connect the wire harness connector to the air conditioning compressor clutch coil connector.
  96.  
  97. Install the crankshaft position sensor and connect electrical connector.
  98.  
  99. Connect oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  100.  
  101. Install starter, tighten bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  102.  
  103. Connect electrical connectors at starter.
  104.  
  105. Connect the coolant pipe to coolant hose.
  106.  
  107. Connect the exhaust pipes to the manifolds.
  108.  
  109. Connect the down stream oxygen sensor connectors.
  110.  
  111. Connect air conditioning compressor electrical connectors.
  112.  
  113. Install new oil filter.
  114.  
  115. Install lower splash shield and tighten retaining bolts.
  116.  
  117. Lower vehicle.
  118.  
  119. Install power steering pump.
  120.  
  121. Connect lines to power steering pump.
  122.  
  123. Install accessory drive belt.
  124.  
  125. Install air cleaner housing assembly.
  126.  
  127. Connect intake air temperature sensor connector.
  128.  
  129. Connect negative battery cable.
  130.  
  131. Fill coolant system.
  132.  
  133. Fill engine with correct grade of oil.
  134.  
  135. Install strut tower support.
  136.  
  137. Install cowl screen.
  138.  
  139. Install wiper arms.
  140.  
  141. Install the hood.
  142.  
  143. Fill the pump fluid reservoir to the proper level and let the fluid settle for at least two minutes.
  144.  
  145. Evacuate and charge air conditioning system
  146.  
  147. Start engine and check for leaks.
  148.  
  149. Turn steering wheel all the way to the left.
  150.  
  151. Raise the front wheels off the ground.
  152.  
  153. Slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock 20 times with the engine off while checking the fluid level.
    NOTE
    Vehicles with long return lines or oil coolers turn wheel 40 times.

  154.  
  155. Start the engine. With the engine idling maintain the fluid level.
  156.  
  157. Lower the front wheels and let the engine idle for two minutes.
  158.  
  159. Turn the steering wheel in both direction and verify power assist and quiet operation of the pump.
    NOTE
    If the fluid is extremely foamy or milky looking, allow the vehicle to stand a few minutes and repeat the procedure.

3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    NOTE
    Capture and store any residual fluid drainage, or leakage from ancillary components, in the appropriately marked containers.

  2.  
  3. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure.
  4.  
  5. Center and secure the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Evacuate the air conditioning system.
  10.  
  11. Remove the hood.
  12.  
  13. Remove the windshield cowl assembly.
  14.  
  15. Raise and support the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering pump and set it aside without disconnecting the lines.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower engine close out panel.
  20.  
  21. Drain the cooling system.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front drive axles and housing (if equipped with AWD).
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the alternator electrical connectors.
  28.  
  29. Separate the steering column coupling from the steering gear.
  30.  
  31. Remove the starter and spacer plate.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the oil cooler hose at the oil cooler and remove the cooler hose retainer at the transmission.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the transmission line bracket at the air conditioning compressor and allow the bolt to rest on the cradle.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the ground strap at the right transmission housing.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the engine block heater wiring connector and set aside (if equipped).
  40.  
  41. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  42.  
  43. Disconnect the left No.2 oxygen senor electrical connector and separate the exhaust manifold from the left exhaust pipe.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the right No.2 oxygen senor electrical connector and separate the exhaust manifold from the right exhaust pipe.
  46.  
  47. Remove the flex plate inspection cover and torque converter bolts.
  48.  
  49. Remove the transmission housing to engine mounting bolts accessible.
  50.  
  51. Remove the engine mounting to cradle fasteners.
  52.  
  53. Lower the vehicle.
  54.  
  55. Remove the upper intake manifold.
  56.  
  57. Disconnect the heater hose and coolant reservoir hose from the rear coolant pipe.
  58.  
  59. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector and the ground wire on the left cylinder head cover.
  60.  
  61. Disconnect the coolant temperature, cam position, oil pressure sensor electrical connectors.
  62.  
  63. Disconnect the left ignition coil and fuel injector harness connectors and position the wiring harness aside
  64.  
  65. Remove the right intake manifold support braces.
  66.  
  67. Disconnect the capacitor and ground strap from the right cylinder head cover.
  68.  
  69. Disconnect the oxygen sensor, knock, EGR, injector and ignition coil harness connectors and position the wiring harness aside.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the transmission housing and remove the remaining transmission housing bolts.
  72.  
  73. Connect the engine lifting bracket from special tool kit 8534B to the right rear of the cylinder head outer most bolt access hole.
  74.  
  75. Install a bolt into the inner most bolt access hole next to the engine lift bracket to assure lifting bracket positioning.
  76.  
  77. Connect an engine hoisting chain to the left timing chain cover engine lifting point and engine lift bracket.
    WARNING
    While slowly separating the engine from the vehicle, constant checks must be made to assure proper positioning and that no damage to other components or wiring harnesses occur during separation.


    NOTE
    As the engine is hoisted from the engine bay area, remove the loosened air conditioning compressor bolt retaining the transmission cooler lines and direct the lines aside.

  79. Carefully remove the engine from the engine bay area.
  80.  

To install:


WARNING
Care must be taken when installing the engine to prevent pinching the power steering rack sensor with the left engine mount.

  1. Install special tool 8534B, engine lifting bracket to the right rear of the cylinder head and install a bolt into the inner most bolt hole next to the bracket.
  2.  
  3. Connect an engine hoisting chain to the left timing chain cover lifting point and the engine lifting bracket.
    WARNING
    Care must be taken when installing the engine to prevent pinching the power steering rack sensor with the left engine mount. Constantly check to assure proper positioning and no damage occurs to other components or harnesses until union is made.


    NOTE
    As the engine is lowered into the engine bay area, install and hand tighten the air conditioning compressor bolts.

  4.  
  5. Carefully install the engine into the engine bay area and complete the union with the transmission.
  6.  
  7. Properly route the engine wiring harness behind the engine and tighten the accessible transmission bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Properly position the right engine harness and connect the oxygen sensor, knock sensor, EGR, fuel injector and ignition coil harness connectors.
  10.  
  11. Connect the capacitor and ground strap to the right cylinder head cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the right intake manifold support braces.
  14.  
  15. Properly position the left engine harness and connect the ignition coil and fuel injector harness connectors.
  16.  
  17. Connect the coolant temperature, cam position, oil pressure sensor harness connectors.
  18.  
  19. Connect the oxygen sensor, and the ground wire, to the left cylinder head cover.
  20.  
  21. Connect the heater hose and coolant reservoir hose to the rear coolant pipe.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper intake manifold.
  24.  
  25. Install the power steering pump. Install three pump mounting bolts through access holes in pulley and engine bracket. Tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) torque.
  26.  
  27. Connect the upper radiator hose.
  28.  
  29. Raise and support the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Install the engine mounting nuts and tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (101 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the remaining transmission housing bolts and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the torque converter bolts. Tighten bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the torque converter inspection cover. Tighten bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  38.  
  39. Connect the right exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and connect the oxygen sensor.
  40.  
  41. Install the front drive axle housing and front axle shafts (if equipped with AWD).
  42.  
  43. Connect the left exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and connect the oxygen sensor.
  44.  
  45. Install the crankshaft position sensor. Torque to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Connect the engine block heater (if equipped).
  48.  
  49. Connect the ground strap at the right transmission housing.
  50.  
  51. Tighten the air conditioning compressor bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  52.  
  53. Connect the oil cooler hose at the cooler and secure the cooler hose retainer at the transmission.
  54.  
  55. Connect the lower radiator hose.
  56.  
  57. Install the starter and spacer plate.
  58.  
  59. Align and connect the steering column coupler to the steering gear.
  60.  
  61. Connect the alternator electrical connectors.
  62.  
  63. Install new oil filter.
  64.  
  65. Install the lower engine close out panel.
  66.  
  67. Lower the vehicle.
  68.  
  69. Fill the cooling system to the proper level using the appropriate coolant.
  70.  
  71. Fill engine crankcase with proper oil to correct level.
  72.  
  73. Evacuate and recharge air conditioning.
  74.  
  75. Install the windshield wiper cowl assembly.
  76.  
  77. Install the hood.
  78.  
  79. Connect the negative battery cable.
  80.  
  81. Start engine and run until operating temperature is reached and radiator fans cycle.
  82.  
  83. Check all fluid levels and properly fill.
  84.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Perform the fuel system pressure release procedure.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air cleaner resonator and duct work as an assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two push pins that secure the front cowl top panel to the right rear corner of the engine compartment.

  13. Remove the front cowl top panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the windshield wiper arms.

  17. Remove the push-pin that secures each end of the cowl top panel to each front fender.
  18.  
  19. Disengage the two 1 / 4 -turn fasteners that secure the cowl top panel to the dash panel.
  20.  
  21. Remove the six push-pins that secure the cowl top panel to the strut tower support.
  22.  
  23. Disengage the integral retaining clips that secure the cowl top panel to the dash panel and remove the cowl panel from the engine compartment.
  24.  
  25. Drain cooling system.
  26.  
  27. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  28.  
  29. Remove upper radiator hose.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector.
  32.  
  33. Remove cooling fan mounting bolts.
  34.  
  35. Remove radiator cooling fan assembly from vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove the air conditioning compressor with the lines attached. Secure compressor out of the way.
  38.  
  39. Remove the alternator support bracket.
  40.  
  41. Remove alternator.
  42.  
  43. Remove the intake manifold and IAFM as an assembly.
  44.  
  45. Remove the ground wires from the rear of each cylinder head.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect the heater hoses.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to disconnect power steering hoses from pump, for power steering pump removal.

  48.  
  49. Remove the power steering pump and set aside.
  50.  
  51. Disconnect the fuel supply line.
  52.  
  53. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist and drain the engine oil.
  54.  
  55. Remove the belly pan.
  56.  
  57. Remove engine front mount to frame nuts.
  58.  
  59. For AWD only: Mark the front driveshaft to the flange at both ends to ensure correct installation.
  60.  
  61. For AWD only: Remove front drive shaft fasteners from the differential and transfer case. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
  62.  
  63. For AWD only: Remove the left and right front drive axles.

  65. For AWD only: Remove the differential support bracket from the differential to the engine block.
  66.  
  67. For AWD only: Unbolt the differential from the oil pan.
  68.  
  69. For AWD only: Rotate the differential so the drive flange is facing forward and the oil pan side is facing up. Remove the differential out through the opening at the rear of the cradle.
  70.  
  71. For AWD only: Remove the intermediate shaft from the oil pan.
  72.  
  73. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from their retainers at the oil pan bolts.
  74.  
  75. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifolds.
  76.  
  77. Disconnect the starter wires. Remove starter motor.
  78.  
  79. Remove the torque converter access cover.
  80.  
  81. Remove drive plate to converter bolts.
  82.  
  83. Remove transmission bellhousing to engine block bolts.
  84.  
  85. Lower the vehicle.
  86.  
  87. Install engine lift fixture, special tool 8984 and 8984-UPD.
  88.  
  89. Separate engine from transmission, remove engine from vehicle, and install engine assembly on a repair stand.

To install:

  1. Install engine lift fixture Special tool 8984 and 8984-UPD.
  2.  
  3. Position the engine in the engine compartment.
  4.  
  5. Lower engine into compartment and align engine with transmission.
  6.  
  7. Mate engine and transmission and install two transmission-to-engine block mounting bolts finger tight.
  8.  
  9. Lower engine assembly until engine mount studs rest in frame perches.
  10.  
  11. Install remaining transmission to engine block mounting bolts and tighten to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install and tighten engine mount to frame nuts.
  14.  
  15. Install drive plate to torque converter bolts. Torque to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the torque converter access cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the starter and connect the starter wires.
  20.  
  21. For AWD only: Install the intermediate shaft to the oil pan. Torque fasteners to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  22.  
  23. For AWD only: Install the front differential through the opening at the rear of the cradle, and attach to the oil pan.
  24.  
  25. For AWD only: Fasten the differential to the oil pan. Torque to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  26.  
  27. For AWD only: Install the differential support bracket to the differential and the engine block.
  28.  
  29. For AWD only: Install the left and right front drive axles.
  30.  
  31. For AWD only: Install front drive shaft into the differential and transfer case.
  32.  
  33. Install exhaust pipe to manifold.
  34.  
  35. Lower the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove engine lift fixture, special tool 8984 and 8984-UPD.
  38.  
  39. Connect the fuel supply line.
  40.  
  41. Install the power steering pump. Torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Connect the heater hoses.
  44.  
  45. Reconnect the ground wires to the rear of each cylinder head.
  46.  
  47. Install the intake manifold.
  48.  
  49. Install the alternator, alternator support bracket, and wire connections.
  50.  
  51. Install air conditioning compressor.
  52.  
  53. Install the accessory drive belt.
  54.  
  55. Position radiator cooling fan assembly in vehicle.
  56.  
  57. Install cooling fan mounting bolts. Tighten to 50 inch lbs. (6 Nm)
  58.  
  59. Connect cooling fan electrical connector.
  60.  
  61. Install upper radiator hose.
  62.  
  63. Connect the radiator lower hose.
  64.

  69. Position the cowl top panel into the engine compartment.

  71. Engage the integral retaining clips that secure the cowl top panel to the dash panel.

  73. Install the six push-pins that secure the cowl top panel to the strut tower support.
  74.  
  75. Engage the 1 / 4 -turn fasteners that secure cowl top panel to the dash panel.
  76.  
  77. Install the push-pin that secures each end of the cowl top panel to each front fender.
  78.  
  79. Install the windshield wiper arms.
  80.  
  81. Position the front cowl top panel to the right rear corner of the engine compartment.
  82.  
  83. Install the two push-pins that secure the front cowl top panel.
  84.  
  85. Install the air cleaner resonator and duct work.
  86.  
  87. Add engine oil to crankcase.
  88.  
  89. Fill cooling system.
  90.  
  91. Install the engine cover.
  92.  
  93. Connect battery negative cable.
  94.  
  95. Start engine and inspect for leaks.
  96.  
  97. Install the belly pan.
  98.  
  99. Road test vehicle.
