Overhaul

NOTE
DO NOT inspect the oil relief valve assembly. If the oil relief valve is suspect, replace the oil pump.

  1. Disassemble oil pump.
  2.
  3. Clean all parts thoroughly. Mating surface of the oil pump housing should be smooth. Replace pump cover if scratched or grooved.
  4.
  5. Lay a straightedge across the pump cover surface. If a 0.001 in. (0.025mm) feeler gauge can be inserted between cover and straight edge, cover should be replaced.
  6.
  7. Measure thickness and diameter of outer rotor. If outer rotor thickness measures 0.563 in. (14.299mm) or less, or if the diameter is 3.141 in. (79.78mm) or less, replace outer rotor.
  8.
  9. If inner rotor measures 0.563 in. (14.299mm) or less replace inner rotor .
  10.
  11. Slide outer rotor into body, press to one side with fingers and measure clearance between rotor and body . If measurement is 0.015 in. (0.39mm) or more, replace body only if outer rotor is in specifications.
  12.
  13. Install inner rotor into body. If clearance between inner and outer rotors is 0.008 in. (0.20mm) or more, replace both rotors.
  14.
  15. Place a straightedge across the face of the body, between bolt holes. If a feeler gauge of 0.003 in. (0.077mm) or more can be inserted between rotors and the straightedge, replace pump assembly ONLY if rotors are in specs.
  16.
  17. Assemble oil pump.
  18.

Removal & Installation

2.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove crankshaft vibration damper.
  4.
  5. Remove timing chain cover.
  6.
  7. Remove timing chain and sprockets.
  8.
  9. Remove oil pan.
  10.
  11. Remove oil pick-up tube and O-ring.
  12.
  13. Ensure that crankshaft position is at 60° ATDC of No.1 cylinder, or crankshaft sprocket mark aligns with mark on oil pump. This position will properly locate oil pump upon installation.
  14.
  15. Remove oil pump attaching bolts.
  16.
  17. Remove oil pump.

To install:

WARNING
Crankshaft position must be at 60° ATDC of No.1 cylinder before installing oil pump. This position will properly locate oil pump. If not properly located, severe damage to oil pump can occur.

  1. Prime oil pump before installation by filling rotor cavity with engine oil.
  2.
  3. If crankshaft has been rotated, it must be repositioned to 60° ATDC of No.1 cylinder prior to oil pump installation.
  4.
  5. Install oil pump carefully over crankshaft and into position.
  6.
  7. Install oil pump attaching bolts. Tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install oil pick-up tube with new O-ring. Lubricate O-ring with clean engine oil before installation. Tighten attaching bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  10.
  11. Install oil pan.
  12.
  13. Install timing chain and sprockets.
  14.
  15. Install timing chain cover.
  16.
  17. Install crankshaft vibration damper.
  18.
  19. Fill crankcase with engine oil to correct level.
  20.

5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove the oil pan and pick-up tube.
  4.
  5. Remove the timing chain cover.
  6.
  7. Remove the four bolts, and the oil pump.
  8.
  9. Wash all parts in a suitable solvent.
    NOTE
Oil pump pressure relief valve and spring should not be removed from the oil pump. If these components are disassembled and or removed from the pump the entire oil pump assembly must be replaced.

  10.
  11. Remove the pump cover.
  12.
  13. Clean all parts thoroughly. Mating surface of the oil pump housing should be smooth. If the pump cover is scratched or grooved the oil pump assembly should be replaced.
