Diagnosis & Testing



Charging System No Code Test

NOTE
Battery condition must be verified prior to this test.

  1. Inspect the generator belt tension and condition.
  2.  
  3. Start engine.
  4.  
  5. With the scan tool set the engine speed to 1600 rpm for 30 seconds.
  6.  
  7. With the scan tool return the engine to idle speed and read codes.
  8.  
  9. If there are any charging system trouble codes present, perform the DTC Test.
  10.  
  11. If there are no charging system trouble codes present:
    NOTE
    The voltage should cycle from low to high at the generator field driver terminal.



    Turn ignition on (engine off ).
     
    With the scan tool actuate the generator field.
     
    With a voltmeter backprobe the generator field DR terminal at the back of the generator.
     

    1. While monitoring the scan tool, wiggle the field terminals back to the PCM and the ASD relay:

      If there is any interruption in the normal cycle between low and high voltage, repair the wire where wiggling interrupted the voltage cycle.
       
      If there is no interruption in the normal cycle between low and high voltage, with the scan tool read trouble codes and perform DTC Test if there are any charging system trouble codes.

    3. If there are no charging system trouble codes present:
      CAUTION
      Ensure all wires are clear of the engine-s moving parts.



      Connect a voltmeter between the generator (12 V) B(+) terminal and the battery (+) side.
       



      Start the engine.
       
      Verify if the voltage is above 0.1 volt, if the voltage is above 0.1 volt, repair the generator ground for high resistance, generator case to battery (-) side.

    5. If the voltage is below 0.1 volt:

      With the scan tool read the battery voltage and record.
       
      Using a voltmeter measure the battery voltage, record second voltage reading.
       
      Compare the two voltage readings.
       
      If there is a voltage difference less than one volt the test is complete.
       

    6.  
    7. If there is a voltage difference greater than one volt:

      With the ignition key off , disconnect the Power Train Control Module.
       
      With a voltmeter, measure the fused B (+) at the PCM.
       
      If the voltage is within one volt of the scan tool recorded reading, repair the B (+) circuit for high resistance between the PCM cavity 46 and the battery.
       
      If the voltage is not within one volt of the scan tool recorded reading, replace the Power Train Control Module.

Removal & Installation



2.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Lower plastic splash shield
     
    Transmission cooler and position it aside
     
    Lower radiator crossmember support
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen but do not remove:

    Adjusting -T- bolt and the pivot bolt
     
    Drive belt adjusting bolt
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt
     
    Alternator field circuit plug
     
    Alternator B+ terminal nut and wire
     
    Pivot bolt; be careful not to lose the spacer

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator
     
    Pivot bolt with the spacer and leave loose
     
    Alternator field circuit plug
     
    Alternator B+ wire and terminal nut; then, torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Drive belt

  3. Using a belt tension gauge, torque the adjusting -T- bolt until the tension gauge reads 120 lbs. (534 N) for a used belt or 180-200 lbs. (792-880 N) for a new belt.

    Lower radiator crossmember support
     
    Transmission cooler
     
    Lower plastic splash shield
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Torque the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Pivot bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    2.  
    3. 8mm mounting bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
    4.  
    5. 10mm mounting bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

3.2L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Lower mounting bolt and pivot bolt
     
    Drive belt tension bolt
     
    Drive belt
     
    Bracket, lower mounting bolt and pivot bolt
     
    Alternator
     
    Alternator field circuit plug
     
    Alternator B+ terminal nut and wire

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator B+ wire and terminal nut; then, torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Alternator field circuit plug
     
    Alternator
     
    Drive belt
     
    Pivot bolt and lower mounting bolt
     

  2.  
  3. Using a belt tension gauge, torque the -V- drive belt until the tension gauge reads 120 lbs. (534 N) for a used belt or 140-160 lbs. (623-711 N) for a new belt.
  4.  
  5. Using a belt tension gauge, torque the Poly -V- belt until the tension gauge reads 120 lbs. (534 N) for a used belt or 180-200 lbs. (792-880 N) for a new belt.
  6.  
  7. Install the bracket.
  8.  
  9. Torque the bolts to the following specifications:
    1. Pivot bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    2.  
    3. 8mm mounting bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
    4.  
    5. 10mm mounting bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
