Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transaxle, inspection cover and flywheel/flexplate.
  8.  
  9. Using a small prytool, carefully pry out the rear oil seal. Be careful not to nick or damage the crankshaft flange seal surface or the retainer bore.

To install:

  1. Place the Seal Pilot tool C-4681 on the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Lightly coat the oil seal outside diameter with Loctite® Stud N' Bearing Mount® or the equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Apply a light coating of engine oil to the entire circumference of the oil seal lip.
  6.  
  7. Place the seal over the special tool and tap the seal in place with a plastic mallet.
  8.  
  9. Install the flexplate/flywheel and transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Fill the transaxle with the proper fluid.
  14.  
  15. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
