Brake Drums

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Brake drum from the rear hub and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. If the drum is difficult to remove, increase the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum as follows:
    1. Remove the rubber plug from the top of the brake support plate.
    2.  
    3. Rotate the automatic shoe adjuster screw with an upward motion using a medium size flat tipped tool.
    4.  
    5. Remove the brake drum from the rear hub and bearing.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Inspect the brake shoe linings and drums for wear, contamination and scoring.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear brake drum onto the rear hub and bearing assembly.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the brake shoes as follows:
    1. Rotate the automatic shoe adjuster in a downward motion using a medium size flat tip tool. Turn the adjuster until there is a slight drag felt while turning the drum.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rubber plug back into the top part of the brake support plate
     
    Rear wheels and lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern sequence to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
