Removal & Installation

Left Side
  1. Raise and support vehicle
  2.
  3. On both sides of vehicle, remove wheel mounting nuts, then rear tire and wheel assembly.
    CAUTION
Before opening fuel system, review all Warnings and Cautions.

  4.
  5. Remove fuel filler tube.
  6.
  7. Position an extra pair of jack stands under and support forward end of engine cradle to help stabilize vehicle during rear suspension removal/installation.
  8.
  9. Perform following if vehicle is equipped with dual-exhaust.
  10.
  11. Position under-hoist utility jack or stand several inches below exhaust at muffler.
  12.
  13. Disconnect exhaust isolators at muffler and resonators hangers.
  14.
  15. Lower exhaust down to rest upon top of jack or stand placed below muffler.
  16.
  17. Position under-hoist utility jack or transmission jack under center of rear axle differential.
  18.
  19. Raise jack head to contact differential and secure in place. Remove shock absorber lower mounting bolt and nut.
    WARNING
When removing crossmember mounting bolts it is important NOT to loosen or remove crossmember mounting bolts on opposite side of vehicle. Doing so will require rear wheel alignment following reinstallation to ensure proper thrust angle.

  20.
  21. Remove both front and rear crossmember mounting bolts on repair-side of vehicle. If equipped with AWD, be sure to not to misplace spacers between crossmember mounts and body.
    WARNING
To avoid damaging other components of vehicle, do not lower crossmember any further than necessary to remove shock absorber.

  22.
  23. Slowly lower jack allowing repair-side of crossmember to drop. Do not lower jack at a fast rate.
  24.
  25. Lower jack just enough to allow toe link mounting bolt at crossmember.
  26.
  27. If equipped, remove wheel speed sensor cable from toe link.
  28.
  29. While holding toe adjustment cam bolt from rotating, remove nut securing toe link at crossmember .
  30.
  31. Slide cam bolt rearward out of crossmember and link.
  32.
  33. Remove mounting bolt and nut at knuckle.
  34.
  35. Remove toe link.
  36.

To install:

  1. Slide crossmember end of toe link into box bracket on crossmember.
  2.
  3. Slide cam bolt through bracket and link from rear.
  4.
  5. Install bolt and nut securing link to knuckle. Do not tighten bolt at this time.
  6.
  7. While holding toe adjustment cam bolt from rotating (cam facing upward), Install cam washer and nut securing toe link at crossmember. Do not tighten nut at this time.
  8.
  9. If equipped, attach wheel speed sensor cable to toe link.
  10.
  11. Carefully raise jack, guiding coil spring and lower end of shock absorber into mounted positions.
  12.
  13. When lower shock mounting bolt holes line up install bolt and nut. Do not tighten at this time.
    NOTE
Rear crossmember mounting bolts are longer than front mounting bolts. Do not interchange mounting bolts.

  14.
  15. Continue to raise crossmember in not already in mounted position, then install crossmember mounting bolts. Snug, but do not fully tighten bolts at this time.
  16.
  17. Measure distance between from tension link to body weld flange directly in front of it, just outboard of front mount bushing. This distance must be at least 12 mm to allow proper clearance for suspension movement. If distance is less than 12 mm, shift that side of rear crossmember directly rearward until distance is 12 mm or greater. To do so, loosen 3 mounting bolts slightly, leaving one on opposite side of shift snugged to pivot off of. Shift crossmember rearward and snug loosened bolts. Measure opposite side to be sure it also maintains minimum 12 mm distance.
  18.
  19. Tighten all crossmember mounting bolts to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm) torque.
  20.
  21. Remove jack from under rear axle differential.
  22.
  23. If previously lowered, raise rear exhaust back to mounted position and connect exhaust isolators at muffler and resonators hangers.
  24.
  25. Remove jack or stand below exhaust muffler.
  26.
  27. Install fuel filler tube.
  28.
  29. Install tire and wheel assemblies.
  30.
  31. Tighten wheel mounting nuts to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm) torque.
  32.
  33. Lower vehicle.
  34.
  35. Position vehicle on alignment rack/drive-on lift. Raise vehicle as necessary to access mounting bolts.
  36.
  37. Tighten shock absorber lower mounting bolt nut to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm) torque.
  38.
  39. Tighten toe link fasteners to:
    1. Nut at crossmember to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm) torque (This nut may be tightened after rear wheel alignment toe is set. Do not tighten from bolt head end.).
    2.
    3. Bolt at knuckle to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm) torque.
    4.

  40.
  41. Perform wheel alignment.
  42.
