Removal & Installation



2.0L (Fs) Engine

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1999-2002

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Alternator upper mounting bolt
     
    Alternator adjusting bolt
     
    Drive belt from the alternator pulley
     
    Transverse member
     
    Electrical connectors from the alternator
     
    Front exhaust pipe at the catalytic converter and suspend it on a piece of wire
     
    Oxygen Sensor (O 2 S)
     
    3 exhaust manifold flange nuts and the hold-down bracket clamp
     
    Exhaust pipe
     
    Alternator lower through-bolt
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  

To install:



Alternator
 
Alternator bolts. Tighten the lower bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm) and the upper bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
 
Drive belt, check the belt deflection by applying moderate pressure 22 lbs. (98 N) between the alternator and the water pump pulley. The deflection on a new belt should be 6.5-7 inch (0.26-0.27mm) or on a used belt, 7.0-9.0 inch (0.28-0.35mm). Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and use the adjusting bolt to adjust the belt tension to the correct specification.

2.5L (Kl) Engines

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1999-2002

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fresh air duct
     
    Radiator upper bracket
     
    Condenser fan, if equipped
     
    Electrical connectors from the alternator
     
    Loosen the belt tensioner locknut and tension adjusting bolt
     
    Alternator upper mounting bolt
     
    Right splash shield
     
    Drive belt from the alternator pulley
     
    A/C compressor and support it aside, leaving the refrigerant lines connected, if necessary
     
    Alternator through-bolt
     
    Alternator
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Alternator. Torque the lower bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm) and the upper bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
     
    A/C compressor, if removed. Torque the bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs. (15-21 Nm).
     
    Drive belt, check the belt deflection by applying moderate pressure 22 ft. lbs. (98 N) between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley to check the alternator belt or midway between the A/C compressor and the crankshaft pulley to check the Air conditioning/alternator belt. The deflection on a new belt should be 6.0-7 inch (0.24-0.27mm) or on a used belt, 7.0-8.0 inch (0.28-0.31mm) on the alternator belt. On models with a air conditioning/alternator belt; the deflection on a new belt should be 5.5-6.5 inch (0.22-0.25mm) or on a used belt, 6.5-7.5 inch (0.26-0.29mm) Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and use the adjusting bolt to adjust the belt tension to the correct specification.
