Operation

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1999-2002

The Knock Sensor (KS) converts the vibration of the cylinder block into a voltage and outputs it. If there is a malfunction of the knock sensor, the voltage output will not change. The PCM checks whether the voltage output changes.

Removal & Installation

2.0L 4-Cylinder Engine (FS)

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1998-2002

  1. Remove the oil filter.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector.
  4.
  5. Using a proper socket wrench, remove the knock sensor.
  6.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  8.
  9. Tighten the knock sensor to 15-25 ft. lbs. (20-34 Nm).
  10.

2.5L V6 Engine (KL)

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1998-2002

  1. Remove the fuel pump relay.
  2.
  3. Start the engine.
  4.
  5. After the engine stalls, crank the engine several times.
  6.
  7. Turn off the ignition switch.
  8.
  9. Install the fuel pump relay.
  10.
  11. Remove the fuel-filler cap and release the pressure in the fuel tank.
  12.
  13. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  14.
  15. Drain the coolant from the radiator.
  16.
  17. Remove the intake manifold. See -Intake Manifold- in -ENGINE MECHANICAL- section.
  18.
  19. Remove the coolant by-pass pipe and the water pipe for access.
  20.
  21. Remove the knock sensor.
  22.
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure.
  24.
  25. Install the intake manifold. See -Intake Manifold- in -ENGINE MECHANICAL- section.
  26.
  27. Refill the radiator with the specified engine coolant.

Testing

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1999-2002

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the knock sensor connector.
  4.
  5. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the knock sensor terminal A and the knock sensor body. Standard value: 560 kohms at approximately 68°F.
  6.
  7. If within specifications, check connectors and wiring between the sensor and ECM/PCM. If ok, replace ECM/PCM.
  8.
  9. If not within specifications, replace the knock sensor.
