Operation



The Turbine Speed Sensor (TSS) is a permanent magnet output coil device that monitors the transmission/transaxle input revolution speed. A reluctor is attached to the transmission/transaxle direct clutch, and is used to generate a constant signal as it passes the TSS magnetic coil. The TSS Sensor utilizes system voltage (12 volts DC), or reference voltage (5 volts DC) to generate a digital output signal to the PCM that is based upon a 0.5 volt AC reference. The alternating magnetic field is used by the sensor output electronics to produce a generated wave form. The TSS waveform is used by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to detect the shift timing of the gears, and to control the engine torque and hydraulic pressure for measured operating conditions.

Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1998-2002

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the resonance chamber, fresh-air duct, and air cleaner component.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel filter mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the input/turbine speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the input/turbine speed sensor.

<To install:>

  1. Apply ATF to a new O-ring and install it on a new input/turbine speed sensor.
  2.  
  3. Install the input/turbine speed sensor and tighten to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the input/turbine speed sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel filter mounting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Install the air cleaner component, fresh-air duct, and resonance chamber.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1998-2002

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire. (driver-s side.)
  4.  
  5. Remove the splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the turbine shaft speed sensor.
  10.  

<To install:>

  1. Apply ATF to a new O-ring and install it on a new turbine shaft speed sensor.
  2.  
  3. Install the turbine shaft speed sensor and tighten to 107-123 inch lbs. (12-13 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the turbine shaft speed sensor connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the splash shield.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel and tire. (driver-s side)
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Testing

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the resonance chamber, fresh-air duct, and air cleaner component.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel filter mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the input/turbine speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Measure resistance between the terminals of the input/turbine speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Resistance should be 253-604 ohms between -40-320°F (-40-160°C).
  12.  
  13. If not correct, replace the input/turbine speed sensor.
