Wheel Hubs & Bearings



Specific to:

Mazda 6 2003

Mazda 626 1999-2002

Mazda Miata 1999-2004

Mazda Millenia 1999-2002

Mazda Protege 1999-2003

Mazda Protege5 2002-2003

The wheel bearings are not adjustable. If the bearings become loose or make noise, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Mazda 626 1999-2002

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  3. Refer to the illustration for component location and torque specifications.
    The wheel bearings are not serviceable. If the bearings are bad, a new hub/bearing assembly must be installed.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels

    Brake drum, if equipped
    Rear caliper and rotor assembly from the hub, if equipped
    Hub dust cover

  7. Raise the staked portion of the hub retaining nut with a hammer and chisel.

    Fig. When installing the new hub nut, be sure to stake it into the notch on the spindle



To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing assembly on the spindle. Torque the new nut to 131-173 ft. lbs. (177-235 Nm).
    Stake the nut into the groove in the spindle
    Dust cover
    Assemble the brakes
    Rear wheel
