Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  4.  
  5. Drain the refrigerant from the A/C system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the intake manifold hose for the turbo, if one is fitted.
  8.  
  9. Remove the multi-grooved V-belt from the compressor.
  10.  
  11. Unplug the compressor electric connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the A/C pipes PAD-connection from the compressor. Plug the openings.
  14.  
  15. Remove the compressor retaining bolts from the attachment and lift up the compressor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two upper retaining bolts for the compressor.
  18.  
  19. Raise the car and remove the air shield in front of the wheel housing.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower retaining bolt and lower the compressor under the hoses for the oil cooler.

To install:

  1. Adjust the oil level in the compressor, see Filling and adjusting compressor oil.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and fit the compressor. Position the compressor under the oil cooler hoses.
  4.  
  5. Fit the two upper retaining bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Refit the air shield in front of the wheel housing.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the upper retaining bolts for the compressor to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Lubricate the two new O-rings with synthetic Vaseline. Remove the plugs from the compressor and the pipes. Fit the new O-rings.
  14.  
  15. Screw the A/C pipes' PAD connection to the compressor and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Plug in the compressor electric connector and press it into the holder.
  18.  
  19. Fit the multi-grooved V-belt.
  20.  
  21. Fit the induction manifold for the turbo, if one is fitted.
  22.  
  23. Evacuate the A/C system and fill with refrigerant.

2.3L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Raise car.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector to the compressor located on the structure/console behind the right-hand headlight.
  10.  
  11. Relieve drive belt tension.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inlet hose with mass air flow sensor without unplugging the connector and set it aside.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heat shield from the exhaust manifold.
  16.  
  17. Remove the by-pass pipe and valve, set aside.
  18.  
  19. Remove the radiator fan connectors on the fan cowling and hose clamps holding the hose to the coolant expansion tank.
  20.  
  21. For automatic transmission vehicles, remove the oil cooler hose from the bottom of the fan cowling.
  22.  
  23. Remove the fan cowling, 2 bolts and 2 locating grooves.
  24.  
  25. Remove the pressure hose from the turbo.

  27. Remove the low-pressure pipe from the compressor and push it aside. Plug the openings.

  29. Remove the high-pressure pipe from the compressor and push it aside. Plug the openings.

  31. Raise the vehicle and remove the air shields. Remove the drive belt from the compressor.

  33. Remove the 3 compressor retaining bolt, start with the top bolt.

  35. Remove compressor from the mounting hook.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Adjust the oil level in the compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install A/C compressor and tighten to:

    M8: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
     
    M10: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Install drive belt. Mount the air shields and Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate and install new O-rings to the compressor pipes.
  8.  
  9. Connect the high and low pressure pipe to the compressor. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10.  
  11. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Evacuate and fill the A/C system with refrigerant.
  14.  
  15. Check for leaks and functionality.
  16.
