Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front right wheel and the cover in the right-hand wheel housing.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the tension on the belt tensioner by turning it anticlockwise (towards the rear of the car) with a 19 mm spanner and lift off the belt.
  8.  
  9. Dismantle the crankshaft pulley with tool 83 95 360 as a backstop.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft belt pulley with a new bolt. Use tool 83 95 360 as a backstop.
  2.  
  3. Tighten crankshaft bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus an additional 45° rotation.
  4.  
  5. Install the multigroove V-belt on all the pulleys. Relieve the tension on the belt tensioner by turning it anticlockwise (towards the rear of the car) with a 19 mm spanner and install the belt on its pulley. Make sure the belt is positioned correctly on all the pulleys.

  7. Install the cover and the wheel

2.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right-hand front wheel and detach the power steering pump from the subframe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cover for the drive belt. Install a wedge between the oil sump and the subframe so that it can be driven in to raise the engine for installing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right-hand engine mounting with yoke.
  10.  
  11. Take the strain off the belt tensioner with the aid of a ratchet handle extension and insert a 3 mm hexagon key in the hole.
    WARNING
    Exercise the utmost care to ensure that the belt tensioner does not break at its end position!

  13. Remove the flywheel cover plate and install 83 94 868 Flywheel Locking Tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel locking segment and install the flywheel cover plate.
  4.  
  5. Drive in the wedge to raise the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install the drive belt, check its position on all the pulleys and remove the strain-relieving hexagon key.
  8.  
  9. Install the RH engine mounting. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the wedge and install the power steering pump pipe.
  12.  
  13. Install the drive belt cover and the wheel. Tighten to 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and run it at idling speed for a while.
  16.  
  17. Switch off the engine and check that the belt is correctly positioned.
