Struts (MacPherson Struts)


Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Front wheel
    Hub nut
    Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS)
    Caliper. Be sure the caliper is properly supported and not hanging from the brake hose.
    Rotor and backing plate
    Tie rod end screw with Puller Tool 89-96-696
    Sway bar and bushing
    Ball joint
    Three upper strut mounting bolts
    Strut housing
    Spring and shock absorber cartridge

  5. Place the strut in a vise and compress the spring.

    Self-locking nut from the bearing plate and discard the nut
    Coil spring, bellows and rubber bumper
    Upper flange nut
    Strut cartridge from the housing

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New strut cartridge and torque the spanner nut to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm)
    Coil spring. Be sure the end of the spring is up against the spring stop.
    Upper spring seat. Make sure the notches are properly aligned. Place the upper bearing assembly on the upper seat and secure it using a new self-locking nut.

  3. Remove the spring compressor and be sure the coil spring stays properly seated.

    Strut assembly and torque the upper mounting bolts 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
    Ball joint and new self locking nut and torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    Tie rod end
    Sway bar and bushing and torque to 96 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
    Backing plate and rotor
    Hub nut. Do not tighten yet
    Front wheel
    Negative battery cable

  5. Torque the hub nut to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) plus an additional 45 degrees.
  7. Pump the brake pedal to position the brake caliper piston.
    Do not attempt to move the vehicle until a firm pedal is obtained.

  9. Check front wheel alignment.
