Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. Plug the ends of the fittings on the valve.
  6.  
  7. Blow any remaining coolant from the heater core with compressed air.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove compartment retaining screws, bolt, quick-release pin and bracket catch. Pull the glove compartment out partway to disconnect the lamp; the remove the glove compartment.
  10.  
  11. Remove the floor console by performing the following procedure:

    Apply the handbrake.
     
    Remove the ignition switch cover plate by loosening the left front corner first and working around the plate counterclockwise. Disconnect the ignition switch lighting connector.
     
    Remove the rear ashtray. Remove the rear trim panel retaining screws and trim panel.
     
    Remove the floor console retaining screws and nuts.
     
    Pull the floor console to the rear and lift to gain access to the window lift and interior light switch connectors.
     
    Remove and disconnect the window lift and interior light switches.
     
    Lift and remove the floor console.

  13. Remove the center console side panel screws and remove both side panels.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with a manual transmission, release the shift lever boot clips and remove the boot.
  16.  
  17. Reach in through the side panel openings and push out the heating and air conditioning control panel.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the electrical and mechanical connectors (as applicable) and remove the heating and air conditioning control panel.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the center console electrical connectors.
  22.  
  23. Remove the center console-to-instrument panel quick-release pins.
  24.  
  25. Remove the center console.
  26.  
  27. Cut the tie-wraps and remove the rear air ducts.
  28.  
  29. Open the heater core case.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the hoses from the heater core.
  32.  
  33. Remove the toggle clips at the sides of the heater core case.
  34.  
  35. Pull the heater hoses down and lift out the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and connect the heater hoses.
  2.  
  3. Install the toggle clips at the sides of the heater core case.
  4.  
  5. Connect the hoses to the heater core.
  6.  
  7. Close the heater core case.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear air ducts.
  10.  
  11. Install the center console.
  12.  
  13. Install the center console-to-instrument panel quick-release pins.
  14.  
  15. Connect the center console electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Install the heating and air conditioning control panel and connect the electrical and mechanical connectors (as applicable).
  18.  
  19. Install the heating and air conditioning control panel.
  20.  
  21. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the boot and the shift lever boot clips.
  22.  
  23. Install the center console side panels and screws.
  24.  
  25. Install the floor console by performing the following procedure:

    Install the floor console.
     
    Connect and install the window lift and interior light switches.
     
    Install the floor console retaining screws and nuts.
     
    Install the rear trim panel and retaining screws. Install the rear ashtray.
     
    Connect the ignition switch lighting connector. Install the ignition switch cover plate.
     
    Release the handbrake.

  27. Install the glove compartment, the bracket catch, the glove compartment retaining screws, the bolt and the quick-release pin.
  28.  
  29. Connect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment.
  30.  
  31. Refill the cooling system.
    NOTE
    On 6-cylinder models, bleed the cooling system.

  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.  
  35. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
