Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hydraulic fluid return line. Turn the steering wheel, stop to stop, until all the fluid is out of the system.
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Lower left dash finish panel
     
    Fuse box
     
    Steering column and pinion shaft locknut. Make certain to straighten the steering wheel and mark it with chalk to center.
     
    Column shaft from pinion shaft
     
    Tracking rods
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rods
     
    Rack assembly retaining clamps
     
    Pressure and return lines from the rack assembly
     
    Rack assembly through the left wheel housing

To install:


NOTE
If a replacement rack assembly is being used, transfer all lines and bellows to the replacement unit as required.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering rack assembly through the left wheel housing and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
     
    Pressure and return lines to the steering rack and torque to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Rack assembly retaining clamps
     
    Tie rods and torque to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Tracking rods to the center of the rack assembly and torque the rods to 63-74 ft. lbs. (85-100 Nm)
     
    Column shaft and pinion shaft
     
    Lower left dash finish panel
     
    Fuse box
     
    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Hydraulic fluid return line
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the reservoir and turn the steering wheel, stop to stop, until all the air is out of the system.
  4.  
  5. Check the toe-in and steering wheel alignment.
