REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

The thermostat is located in the water outlet housing at the front or on top of the engine. On the V8 the water outlet housing is located in the front of the intake manifold.

To remove the thermostats from all of these engines.

  1. Drain the cooling system. It is not necessary to disconnect or remove any of the hoses.
  2.
  3. Remove the two attaching screws and lift the housing from the engine.
  4.
  5. Remove the thermostat and the gasket.
  6.

To install:
  1. Place the thermostat in the housing with the spring inside the engine.
  2.
  3. Install a new gasket with a small amount of sealing compound applied to both sides.
  4.
  5. The bleed hose on the thermostats used on 6-cylinder engines must be installed up (at 12 o'clock), to prevent `burping' caused by trapped air.
  6.
  7. Install the water outlet and tighten the attaching bolts to 30 ft. lbs.
  8.
  9. Refill the cooling system.
  10.
