The level of lubricant in the steering gear box doesn't need to be checked unless you notice leakage. An oily film is not important, but escaping grease is. To check the level:
- Wipe off the gearbox until you can see one cover bolt between the words check lube. Sometimes there is a filler plug.
- With the wheels turned all the way to the left, remove the cover bolt or filler plug.
- If you can see grease, there is enough. If not, fill the chassis grease through the hole.
- Torque the cover bolt to 25-40 ft. lb. if you have a torque wrench. If not, just pull it down firmly but gently.
