REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Gremlin, Hornet, Concord and Eagle Sedans

  1. Remove the sun visors.
  2.  
  3. Remove the windshield moldings and end caps.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear window moldings and end caps.
  6.  
  7. Remove the plastic trim strip and cap retainers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the dome light.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coat hooks.
  12.  
  13. On Hornet sedans, remove the 4 top screws from the roof extension trim panels.
  14.  
  15. Insert a length of cord in the top hole of each panel and tie them together to hold the panels at a 45° angle.
  16.  
  17. Insert a screwdriver blade under the right side J-molding. Locate and pry out the 3 snap-in clips that retain the J-molding to the roof rail.
  18.  
  19. Lower the headliner on the right side and disengage the left side by raising it up and out of the J-molding.
  20.  
  21. Remove the headliner.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check the accompanying illustration to see how the clips should be repositioned.

AMX, Concord Hatchback, Concord Wagon, Eagle Wagon, Hornet Sportabout, Hatchback, Spirit Liftback and SX/4

  1. Remove the sun visors.
  2.  
  3. Remove the windshield moldings and end caps.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear window moldings and end caps.
  6.  
  7. Remove the plastic trim strip and cap retainers.
  8.  
  9. Remove the dome light.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coat hooks.
  12.  
  13. Insert a length of cord in the top hole of each panel and tie them together to hold the panels at a 45° angle.

  15. Insert a screwdriver blade under the right side J-molding. Locate and pry out the 3 snap-in clips that retain the J-molding to the roof rail.

  17. Lower the headliner on the right side and disengage the left side by raising it up and out of the J-molding.
  18.  
  19. Remove the headliner through the liftgate.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check the accompanying illustration to see how the clips should be repositioned.

Matador Coupe

  1. Remove the sunvisors, front and rear finish moldings, coat hooks, B-pillar trim attaching screws and dome lamp.
  2.  
  3. Insert a screwdriver blade between the retainer and roof rail. Rotate the screwdriver to pop the clips out of the holes in the roof rail. Remove the retainers on either he left or right side.
  4.  
  5. Lower the headliner and remove it through the door.
  6.  

There are two slotted holes in the headliner retainer, one above the other. A barb on the clip is engaged in the lower hole when the headliner is removed from the car. The clips must be positioned to engage the upper holes in all headliner retainers before installing the headliner.

  1. Center the headliner in the car.
  2.  
  3. Insert the left edge into the retainer and, while holding it there, grasp the headliner through the dome light opening to guide the right edge into the retainers.
  4.  
  5. Using the sunvisor holes as guides, center the headliner fore and aft.
  6.  
  7. Push up on the J-molding at each clip location to engage the barbs on the clips with the lower holes in the headliner retainers.
  8.  
  9. Install all the other parts.
  10.  

Matador Sedan

FRONT SECTION
  1. Remove the sunvisors, front and rear finish moldings, coat hooks, B-pillar trim attaching screws and dome lamp.
  2.  
  3. On the 4-door Sedan, remove the:
    1. Front seat
    2.  
    3. Right front door
    4.  
    5. Steering wheel
    6.  

  4.  
  5. On Sedans, remove the rear window finish molding.
  6.  
  7. On Wagons, remove the joint cover molding. The molding is retained by spring steel clips which snap over an embossment in the roof rafter.
  8.  
  9. On Wagons, remove the J-molding screw and joint cover and pry the ends of the headliner joint cover from the J-moldings.
  10.  
  11. Pry the molding downward at the rear side to disengage the retaining clips from the embossment on the roof support rafter. The clips will remain in the molding.
  12.  
  13. Insert a screwdriver under the J-molding and slide it along the right roof rail, prying out each clip as you come to it.
  14.  
  15. Lower the headliner on the right side and disengage the left side of the headliner by carefully raising it up and out of the J-molding.
  16.  
  17. On models which use adhesive as a retaining agent, break the adhesive bond carefull, or use an adhesive disolver.
  18.  
  19. Tip the headliner diagonally and remove it through the door on Sedans, or through the tailgate on Wagons.
  20.

REAR SECTION
  1. Remove the joint cover molding, tailgate opening header molding and J-moldings above the rear quarter windows.
  2.  
  3. Remove the headliner through the tailgate opening.
  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  6.  

Eagle Kammback, Pacer and Spirit Sedan

  1. Remove the sunvisors, sunvisor brackets and top and corner windshield finish moldings.
  2.  
  3. Remove the liftgate finish moldings and dome lamp.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left side finish moldings.
  6.  
  7. Insert a screwdriver blade between the retainer and roof rail. Rotate the screwdriver to pop the clips out of the holes in the roof rail. Remove the retainers on either he left or right side.
  8.  
  9. Lower the headliner on the left side and disengage the right side by raising up and out of the retainers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the headliner through the liftgate opening.
  12.
