Cars with automatic transmission may not be started by pushing or towing. Manual transmission cars may be started by pushing. The car need not be pushed very fast to start.
To push start a manual transmission car:
- Make sure that the bumpers of the two cars align so as not to damage either one.
- Turn on the ignition switch in the pushed car. Place the transmission in Second or Third gear and hold-down the clutch pedal.
- Have the car pushed to a speed of 10-15 mph.
- Ease up on the clutch and press down on the accelerator slightly at the same time. If the clutch is engaged abruptly, damage to the push vehicle may result.
The car should not be towed to start, since there is a chance of the towed vehicle ramming the tow car. Models with automatic should not be towed over 30 mph, for more than 15 miles. If these recommendations must be exceeded, remove the driveshaft to prevent automatic transmission damage.
