The transmission identification tag is attached to the rear of the transmission. It contains both the transmission manufacturer's and American Motor's part number. It is necessary to know both of these numbers when ordering replacement parts.
Be sure to attach the transmission identification tag it is original location when reassembling the transmission.
AUTOMATIC Torque Command
A 7-digit part number is stamped on the left-hand side of the transmission case, above the oil pan. A 4-digit number, indicating the date of manufacture, follows the part number.
If the date number is above 3500, add one for each day after 26 February 1971 to determine the date of manufacture. Hence, 3501 would be 27 February 1971, and 3809 would be 1 January 1972, etc. The final group of numbers is the transmission serial number.
