Power Steering Pump

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 4-150, 6-232, 258 and 8-304, 360 and 401 Engines

  1. Place a drip pan under the pump.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect both hoses at the pump and plug them.
  4.  
  5. It may be necessary to remove the air pump drive belt. Your might also have to remove the steering pump pulley. On cars with A/C, it may be necessary to remove the compressor drivebelt and pulley.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pump mounting nuts and washers from behind.
  8.  
  9. On 6-cylinder engines, loosen the pump bracket pivot bolts. On V8 engines, remove the front pump mounting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pump drive belt and the pump. If the pulley was removed, torque the nut to 60 ft. lbs.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the pump to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install the hoses.
  4.  
  5. Fill the reservoir with the proper fluid as described in General Information and Maintenance .
  6.  
  7. Turn the pump pulley counterclockwise (front view) until no more bubbles appear.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt and adjust it. Some general thoughts on drive belt tightening are given in 5 / 8 in. (41mm) open end wrench.   11. Install and adjust the air pump belt.
  12.  
  13. Bleed the system by raising the front of the car and turning the wheels from side-to-side without hitting the stops for a few minutes. Check the level frequently.

  1. Remove the adjuster locknuts and lockwashers retaining the pump and pivot bracket to the pump mounting bracket. The lower adjuster is accessible from underneath car.
  2.  

Except for the adjuster locknuts, all of the pump mounting bolts are metric sizes. The adjuster locknuts are loosened and tightened using a9/16in. box end wrench having a 45° offset.

  1. Move the pump toward the engine and remove the pump belt.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the return hose clamp and slide the clamp back along the hose.
  4.  
  5. Pull the pump forward and disconnect both hoses.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts attaching the pump front mounting bracket to the rear mounting bracket and the engine block. Remove the pump, pivot bracket and front mounting bracket as an assembly.
  8.  
  9. Position the pump, front mounting bracket, and pivot bracket on the rear mounting bracket and connect the pressure and return hoses to the pump. Tighten the pressure hose fitting to 38 ft.lb. torque.
  10.  
  11. Install the front bracket-to-rear bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. torque. Tighten the front bracket-to-engine blockbolt to 16 ft. lbs. torque.

  13. Slide the return hose clamp into position and tighten the hose clamp.
  14.  
  15. Install the adjuster locknuts and lockwashers.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the pump belt.

  1. Remove the ambient air induction hose and remove the adjusting bracket nut/bolts.
  2.  
  3. Move the pump toward the engine and remove the pump belt.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the return hose clamp and slide the clamp back along the hose.
  6.  
  7. Pull the pump forward and disconnect both hoses. The pressure hose has an 18mm metric fitting.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts attaching the pump front mounting bracket to the rear mounting bracket and the engine block. Remove the pump, pivot bracket, and front mounting bracket as an assembly.
  10.  
  11. Position the pump and mounting brackets on the engine. Connect the pressure and return hoses to the pump. Tighten the pressure hose fitting to 38 ft. lbs. torque.
  12.  
  13. Install the bracket and bracket bolts/nuts. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. torque.
  14.  
  15. Adjust the pump belt tension.
