Disarming the System

2001-03 TL Models




CAUTION
The SRS must be disarmed before any of its components are disconnected or removed. Failing to disable the SRS before servicing its components may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary repairs and possible personal injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Remove the key.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables.
  6.  
  7. Always wait at least 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery before working around the air bags.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The driver-s side air bag connection contains a spring-contact self-disabling device. A shorting connector doesn't need to be installed on the driver-s air bag connector.



    Steering wheel lower access cover
     
    Clip securing the air bag module/cable reel connection to the steering column
     
    Air bag and cable reel connection-Immediately install the red shorting connector onto the air bag module connector.

  11. After servicing has been completed, couple the air bag and cable reel connectors.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Clip securing the air bag/cable reel connection to the steering column
     
    Access cover

To enable:

  1. Reconnect the positive and negative battery cables.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but don-t start the engine. The SRS indicator light should turn on for 6 seconds, then turn off. If the SRS indicator light doesn-t come on, or stays on longer than 6 seconds, the system fault must be diagnosed.
  4.  
  5. Enter the radio security code.
  6.  

2004-06 TL & 2005-06 RL Models



  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
    1. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel, then disconnect the driver's airbag 4P connector from the cable reel.

CAUTION
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS, air bag system) must be disarmed before any of its components are disconnected or removed. Failing to disable the SRS before servicing its components may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary repairs and possible personal injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF .
  4.  
  5. Wait 3 minutes to let the capacitor in the backup circuit discharge.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then disconnect the positive battery cable.
  8.  
  9. For the driver air bag:
    1. Remove the access panel lid below the air bag assembly on the steering wheel and remove the red shorting connector.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connector between the air bag and cable reel.
    4.  
    5. Connect the red shorting connector to the air bag side of the connector.
    6.

  11. For the passenger air bag:
    1. If necessary, remove the glove box, then remove the red shorting connector from its holder.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the 3 pin connector between the passenger air bag and the main harness.
    4.  
    5. Connect the shorting connector to the air bag side of the connector.
    6.

  13. After installing the shorting connectors on the air bags, connect shorting connector 07-MAZ-SP0020A, or equivalent, on the cable reel connector and another on the main harness connector of the passenger-s side air bag. This will prevent static electricity from setting off the seat belt pre-tensioners before you disconnect them.

  15. For the seat belt pre-tensioners, disarm them one side at a time:
    1. Remove the B-pillar trim panels.
    2.  
    3. Remove the red shorting connector from the short connector holder.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the pre-tensioner 3-pin connector, then install the shorting connector to the pre-tensioner side of the connector.
    6.

To enable:

  1. Enable the seat belt pre-tensioners:
    1. Disconnect the shorting connector from the 3-pin connector. Then, reconnect the 3-pin connector.
    2.  
    3. Fit the shorting connector into its holder and reinstall the B-pillar trim panels.
    4.

  3. Enable the passenger air bag:
    1. Disconnect the shorting connectors from the air bag and main harness connectors.
    2.  
    3. Reconnect the air bag connector to the main harness.
    4.  
    5. Fit the short connector into its holder.
    6.  
    7. If removed, install the glove box.
    8.

  5. Disconnect the shorting connector from the cable reel connection.
  6.  
  7. Enable the driver's air bag:
    1. Disconnect the shorting connector from the air bag connector.
    2.  
    3. Reconnect the air bag and cable reel connectors.
    4.  
    5. Fit the shorting connector back into its holder.
    6.  
    7. Install the steering wheel access cover.
    8.

  9. Reconnect the positive and negative battery cables.
  10.  
  11. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but don't start the engine. The SRS indicator light should turn on for 6 seconds, then turn off. If the SRS indicator light doesn't come on, or stays on longer than 6 seconds, the system fault must be diagnosed.
  12.  
  13. Enter the radio security code.

RL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive cable.
  4.  
  5. Wait 3 minutes for the air bag reserve power to discharge before preceding with work.
  6.  

To enable:

  1. Reconnect the positive and negative battery cables.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but don't start the engine. The SRS indicator light should turn on for 6 seconds, then turn off. If the SRS indicator light doesn't come on, or stays on longer than 6 seconds, the system fault must be diagnosed.
  4.  
  5. Enter the radio security code.
  6.  

RSX

    1. Remove the glove box.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the front passenger-s 4P connector from the dashboard wire harness.

  11. For the side airbag:
    1. Disconnect both side airbag 2P connectors from the floor wire harness.
    2.  

  12.  
  13. For the seat belt tensioners:
    1. Remove the B-pillar trim panels.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect both seat belt tensioner 2P connectors from the floor wire harness.
    4.

  15. For the seat belt buckle tensioners:
    1. Disconnect both seat belt buckle tensioner 4P connectors.
    2.

To enable:

  1. For the seat belt buckle tensioners:
    1. Connect both seat belt buckle tensioner 4P connectors.
    2.

  3. For the seat belt tensioners:
    1. Connect both seat belt tensioner 2P connectors to the floor wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Install the B-pillar trim panels.
    4.

  5. For the side airbag:
    1. Connect both side airbag 2P connectors to the floor wire harness.
    2.  

  6.  
  7. For the passenger air bag:
    1. Connect the front passenger-s 4P connector to the dashboard wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Install the glove box.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. For the driver air bag:
    1. Connect the driver-s airbag 4P connector to the cable reel. Install the access panel to the steering wheel.
    2.  

  10.  
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, but don't start the engine. The SRS indicator light should turn on for 6 seconds, then turn off. If the SRS indicator light doesn't come on, or stays on longer than 6 seconds, the system fault must be diagnosed.

  15. Enter the radio security code.

  13. For the side curtain air bag:
    1. Disconnect the side curtain airbag 2P connector from the side curtain airbag subharness.

  15. For the seat belt tensioners:
    1. Disconnect both seat belt tensioner 2P connectors from the floor wire harness.
    2.

To enable:

  1. For the seat belt tensioners:
    1. Connect both seat belt tensioner 2P connectors to the floor wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Install the B-pillar trim panels.
    4.

  3. For the side curtain air bag:
    1. Disconnect the side curtain airbag 2P connector from the side curtain airbag subharness.
    2.

  5. For the side airbag:
    1. Connect both side airbag 2P connectors to the floor wire harness.
    2.

  7. For the passenger air bag:
    1. Connect the front passenger-s 4P connector to the dashboard wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Install the glove box.
    4.

  9. For the driver air bag:
    1. Connect the driver-s airbag 4P connector to the cable reel. Install the access panel to the steering wheel.
    2.

  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
