2001-03 TL Models




NOTE
The outer joint is not serviceable, if wear or excessive play is found the joint must be replace.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Halfshaft from the vehicle
     
    Set ring from the inner joint
     
    Inner joint boot bands
     
    Inboard joint after marking relationship of joint-to-rollers for later installation
     
    Rollers from the spider
     
    Circlip from the shaft
     
    Spider using a bearing remover
     
    Stop ring
     
    Inboard boot
     
    Dynamic damper band and damper (if equipped)
     
    Outer joint boot bands and boot (if necessary)
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the splines with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the boots.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Outer joint boot
     
    Dynamic damper
     
    Inner joint boot then remove the tape
     

  4.  
  5. Pack the outer joint boot with grease included with the kit (approx. 4.7 oz.)

    Stop ring into the halfshaft groove
     
    Spider on the halfshaft
     
    Circlip into the halfshaft groove
     
    Rollers onto the spider
     

  6.  
  7. Pack the inner joint with the grease included with the kit (approx. 4.7 oz.)

    Inner joint on the halfshaft matching the marks made earlier
     

  8.  
  9. Adjust the length of the halfshaft to the specification shown in the illustration.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the boots to halfway between full compression and full extension.
  12.  
  13. Position the dynamic damper (if equipped) as shown in the illustration.
  14.  
  15. Install a new dynamic damper band and bend down both locking tabs.
  16.  
  17. Install new inner and outer joint boot bands.
  18.  
  19. Install a new set ring in the halfshaft groove.
  20.  
  21. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.

  9. Adjust the length of the halfshaft to the specification shown in the illustration.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the boots to halfway between full compression and full extension.
  12.  
  13. Position the dynamic damper (if equipped) as shown in the illustration.

  15. Install a new dynamic damper band and bend down both locking tabs.
  16.  
  17. Install new inner and outer joint boot bands.

  19. Install a new set ring in the halfshaft groove.

  21. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.

2004-06 TL And 2005-06 RL Models



Inboard Joint Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the set ring from the inboard joint.
  4.  
  5. Remove the boot bands. Be careful not to damage the boot and dynamic damper.
  6.  
  7. If the boot band is a welded type, cut the boot band.
  8.  
  9. If the boot band is a double loop type, lift up the band end, then push it into the clip.
  10.  
  11. If the boot band is a low profile type, pinch the boot band using commercially available boot band pincers.
  12.  
  13. Make a mark on each roller and inboard joint to identify the locations of rollers and grooves in the inboard joint. Then remove the inboard joint on the shop towel. Be careful not to drop the rollers when separating them from the inboard joint.
  14.  
  15. Make a mark on the rollers and spider to identify the locations of the rollers on the spider, then remove the rollers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the circlip.
  18.  
  19. Mark the spider and driveshaft to identify the position of the spider on the shaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spider
  22.  
  23. Wrap the splines on the driveshaft with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the boot.
  24.  
  25. Remove the inboard boot. Be careful not to damage the boot.
  26.  
  27. Remove the vinyl tape
  28.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the splines with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the inboard boot.
  2.  
  3. Install the inboard boot onto the driveshaft, then remove the vinyl tape. Be careful not to damage the inboard boot
  4.  
  5. Install the spider onto the driveshaft by aligning the marks on the spider and the end of the driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Fit the circlip into the driveshaft groove. Rotate the circlip in its groove to make sure it is fully seated.
  8.  
  9. Fit the rollers onto the spider with their high shoulders facing outward, and note the following:
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the rollers in their original positions on the spider by aligning the marks.
  12.  
  13. Hold the driveshaft pointed up to prevent the rollers from falling off
  14.  
  15. Pack the inboard joint with the joint grease included in the new driveshaft set.
  16.  
  17. Reinstall the inboard joint onto the driveshaft by aligning the marks on the inboard joint and the rollers.

  19. Hold the driveshaft so the inboard joint is pointing up to prevent it from falling off.
  20.  
  21. Adjust the inboard joint so the rollers are in the middle of the joint, then check the driveshaft length measurement to those shown in the illustration.

  23. Install the boot bands.
  24.  
  25. Install the new low profile band onto the boot, then hook the tab of the band.
  26.  
  27. Close the hook portion of the band with a commercially available boot band pincers, then hook the tabs of the band.
  28.  
  29. Install the boot band on the other end of the boot.
  30.  
  31. Fit the boot ends onto the driveshaft and the inboard joint, then install the new double loop band onto the boot.
  32.  
  33. Pull up the slack in the band by hand
  34.  
  35. Mark a position on the band 0.4-0.6 inches (10-14 mm) from the clip.
  36.  
  37. Thread the free end of the band through the nose section of a commercially available boot band tool KD-3191 or equivalent, and into the slot on the winding mandrel.

  39. Place a wrench on the winding mandrel of the boot band tool, and tighten the band until the marked spot on the band meets the edge of the clip.
  40.  
  41. Lift up the boot band tool to bend the free end of the band 90 degrees to the clip. Center-punch the clip, then fold over the remaining tail onto the clip.

  43. Unwind the boot band tool, and cut off the excess free end of the band to leave a 5-10 mm (0.2-0.4 in.) tail protruding from the clip.
  44.  
  45. Bend the band end by tapping it down with a hammer.
    NOTE
    Make sure the band and clip do not interfere with anything on the vehicle and the band does not move.

  46.  
  47. Remove any grease remaining on the surrounding surfaces
  48.  
  49. Install the new set ring.
  50.  

Outboard Joint Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the boot bands. Be careful not to damage the boot and dynamic damper.
  4.  
  5. If the boot band is an ear clamp type, lift up the three tabs with a screwdriver.
  6.  
  7. Slide the outboard boot partially to the inboard joint side. Be careful not to damage the boot.
  8.  
  9. Wipe off the grease to expose the driveshaft and the outboard joint inner race.
  10.  
  11. Make a mark on the driveshaft at the same position of the outboard joint end.

  13. Carefully clamp the driveshaft in a vise.
  14.  
  15. Remove the outboard joint using the tool threaded adapter, 26 x 1.5 mm 07XAC-001030A and a commercially available 5/8'' x 18 UNF slide hammer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the driveshaft from the vise.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stop ring from the driveshaft.
  20.  
  21. Wrap the splines on the driveshaft with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the boot.
  22.  
  23. Remove the outboard boot. Be careful not to damage the boot.
  24.  
  25. Remove the vinyl tape.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the splines with vinyl tape to prevent damage to the outboard boot.
  2.  
  3. Install new ear clamp bands and outboard boot, then remove the vinyl tape. Be careful not to damage the outboard boot.
  4.  
  5. Install the new stop ring in the driveshaft groove.
  6.  
  7. Insert the driveshaft into the outboard joint until the stop ring is closed.

  9. To completely seat the outboard joint, pick up the driveshaft and joint, and tap them on a hard surface.
    NOTE
    Do not use a hammer as excessive force may damage the driveshaft. Be careful not to damage the threaded section of the outboard joint.

  11. Check the alignment of the paint mark with the outboard joint end.
  12.  
  13. Pack the outboard joint with the joint grease included in the new joint boot set.
  14.  
  15. Adjust the length of the driveshafts to those shown in the illustration, then adjust the boots to halfway between full compression and full extension. Make sure the ends of the boots seat in the groove of the driveshaft and joint.

  17. Fit the boot ends onto the driveshaft and outboard joint.
  18.  
  19. Close the ear portion of the band with commercially available boot band pincers Kent-Moore J-35910 or equivalent.
  20.  
  21. Check the clearance between the closed ear portion of the band. If the clearance is not within the standard, close the ear portion of the band farther.
  22.  

CL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    There is a spring located under the outer joint.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Halfshaft from the vehicle
     
    Boot bands
     
    Circlip from the shaft (outer joint only)
     
    Joint from the shaft after matchmarking the rollers and the joint for re-installation
     



    Rollers from the spider
     
    Set ring
     
    Spider using a bearing puller
     
    Stop ring
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Wrap the splines of the halfshaft with vinyl tape to protect the boots from damage.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    CV boot, then remove the tape
     
    Stop ring
     
    Spider
     
    Set ring
     
    Rollers onto the spider
     
    Pack the outer joint with the grease provided (approx. 6.2 oz. for outer joint or 4.4 oz. for the inner)
     
    Spring and cap (outer joint only)
     
    CV joint onto the shaft, matching the marks made earlier
     
    Circlip into the outer joint inner groove
     

  4.  
  5. Adjust the length of the halfshaft as shown in the illustration.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the boots to halfway between full compression and full extension.
  8.  
  9. Install new boot bands on the boots and bend both sets of locking tabs down.
  10.  
  11. Install a new set ring in the halfshaft groove.
  12.  
  13. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.

  11. Adjust the boots to halfway between full compression and full extension.
  12.  
  13. Position the dynamic damper (if equipped) as shown in the illustration.
  14.  
  15. Install a new dynamic damper band and bend down both locking tabs.
  16.  
  17. Install new inner and outer joint boot bands.
  18.  
  19. Install a new set ring in the halfshaft groove.
  20.  
  21. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.

  4.  

To install:

  15. Install a new dynamic damper band and bend down both locking tabs.

  17. Install new inner and outer joint boot bands.

  19. Install a new set ring in the halfshaft groove.
