Removal & Installation



1.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cableEngine wiring harness and connectors from the distributorSpark plug wires from the distributor cap

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine wiring harness and connectors from the distributor
     
    Spark plug wires from the distributor cap
     

  4.  
  5. If removing the ignition coil, remove the distributor cap, rotor, and cap seal, then remove the leak cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following: 2 screws to disconnect the wires from the coilIgnition coil screws and slide the ignition coil out of the distributor housingDistributor hold-down boltsDistributor from the cylinder head

    2 screws to disconnect the wires from the coil
     
    Ignition coil screws and slide the ignition coil out of the distributor housing
     
    Distributor hold-down bolts
     
    Distributor from the cylinder head
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Use a new O-ring coated with engine oil, on the distributor housing.
  2.  
  3. Slip the distributor into position.
  4.  


NOTE
Lugs on the end of the distributor and the matching grooves in the camshaft end are offset to eliminate any possibility of installing the distributor 180 degrees out of time.

  1. Install the hold-down bolts and hand tighten them.
  2.  
  3. Slide the ignition coil into the distributor housing and install the 2 mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following: 2 wires to the coil and install the 2 screws.Distributor leak cover, rotor, cap seal, and capEngine wiring harness and connector to distributorSpark plug wiresNegative battery cable

    2 wires to the coil and install the 2 screws.
     
    Distributor leak cover, rotor, cap seal, and cap
     
    Engine wiring harness and connector to distributor
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Set the timing, then tighten the hold down bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine wiring harness and connectors from the distributor
     
    Spark plug wires from the distributor cap
     

  4.  
  5. If removing the ignition coil, remove the distributor cap, rotor, and cap seal, then remove the leak cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    2 screws to disconnect the wires from the coil
     
    Ignition coil screws and slide the ignition coil out of the distributor housing
     
    Distributor hold-down bolts
     
    Distributor from the cylinder head
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Use a new O-ring coated with engine oil, on the distributor housing.
  2.  
  3. Slip the distributor into position.
    NOTE
    Lugs on the end of the distributor and the matching grooves in the camshaft end are offset to eliminate any possibility of installing the distributor 180 degrees out of time.

  5. Install the hold-down bolts and hand tighten them.
  6.  
  7. Slide the ignition coil into the distributor housing and install the 2 mounting screws.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    2 wires to the coil and install the 2 screws.
     
    Distributor leak cover, rotor, cap seal, and cap
     
    Engine wiring harness and connector to distributor
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Set the timing, then tighten the hold down bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: The negative battery cableThe spark plug and coil wires from the distributor capHarness connector(s) from the distributorDistributor mounting boltsDistributor from the cylinder head

    The negative battery cable
     
    The spark plug and coil wires from the distributor cap
     
    Harness connector(s) from the distributor
     
    Distributor mounting bolts
     
    Distributor from the cylinder head
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: New O-ring coated with engine oil, on the distributor housingDistributorMounting bolts and tighten them to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)Spark plug and coil wiresNegative battery cable

    New O-ring coated with engine oil, on the distributor housing
     
    Distributor
     
    Mounting bolts and tighten them to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Spark plug and coil wires
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check the ignition timing with a timing light. The timing marks are located on the crankshaft pulley and lower timing cover. If the timing is not within specification replace the PCM module.
