Removal & Installation



2001-03 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Be sure the crankshaft is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the No. 1 cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Any time the oil pump is removed, the front oil seal should be replaced.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (if necessary)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Oil pan
     
    Pickup screen
     
    Oil pump from the front of the engine
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the mounting surface of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump, using new O-rings. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump pickup screen
     
    Oil pan and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and torque the bolt to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Wait at least 30 minutes after completion of procedure before refilling the engine with oil. The waiting period is to allow the silicone sealant (liquid gasket) to cure.
  10.  
  11. Refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check the engine for leaks.
  14.  
  15. Turn off engine and check the oil level. Top off the oil level if necessary.
  16.  

2001-04 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Be sure the crankshaft is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the No. 1 cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Any time the oil pump is removed, the front oil seal should be replaced.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (if necessary)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Oil pan
     
    Pickup screen
     
    Oil pump from the front of the engine
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the mounting surface of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump, using new O-rings. Tighten the 6mm bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump pickup screen
     
    Oil pan and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and torque the bolt to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.

  11. Refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check the engine for leaks.

2004-06 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor A/B.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left side engine compartment cover and left rear engine compartment cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right fender trim and right side engine compartment cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right rear engine compartment cover, left fender trim and front bulkhead cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the strut brace.
  18.  
  19. Lift and support the engine with an engine support tool such as AAR-T-12566.
  20.  
  21. Remove the VTEC solenoid valve and oil filter assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pan.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil screen.
  26.  
  27. Remove the mounting bolts and the oil pump assembly.

To install:

  1. Remove the old oil seal from the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Gently tap in the new oil seal until the seal driver bottoms on the pump.
  4.  
  5. Remove any old liquid gasket from the oil pump mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Clean and dry the oil pump mating surfaces.
  8.  
  9. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pump.
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, re-apply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.

  10.  
  11. Grease the lip of the oil seal, and apply oil to the new O-ring.
  12.  
  13. Install the dowel pins, then align the inner rotor with the crankshaft and install the oil pump. Tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Clean the excess grease off the crankshaft, and check the seal for distortion.
  16.  
  17. Apply oil to the new O-ring, install the oil screen.
  18.  
  19. Install the oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  22.  
  23. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
  24.  

2005-06 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the windshield wiper arms.
  6.  
  7. Remove the intake manifold cover, right upper fender trim, battery trim, and left upper fender trim, then remove the upper grille cover and cowl cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the under-hood fuse/relay box, connector, and transfer breather hose from the strut brace, then remove the strut brace.
  10.  
  11. Remove the connector bracket from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach engine balancer bar front arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine mount control solenoid valve bracket from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach engine balancer bar rear arm.
  14.  
  15. Lift and support the engine with engine hanger and engine balancer bar Attach the front arm to the front cylinder head with a spacer and the 10 x 1.25 mm bolt. Attach the rear arm to the rear cylinder head with the 8 x 1.25 mm bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the timing belt.
  18.  
  19. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rocker arm oil control solenoid/oil filter assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pan.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil screen then remove the oil pump.

To install:

  1. Remove the old oil seal from the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Gently tap in the new oil seal until the seal driver bottoms on the pump.
  4.  
  5. Remove any old liquid gasket from the oil pump mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
  6.  
  7. Clean and dry the oil pump mating surfaces.
  8.  
  9. Apply liquid gasket evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pump.
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, re-apply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.

  10.  
  11. Grease the lip of the oil seal, and apply oil to the new O-ring.
  12.  
  13. Install the dowel pins, then align the inner rotor with the crankshaft and install the oil pump. Tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Clean the excess grease off the crankshaft, and check the seal for distortion.
  16.  
  17. Apply oil to the new O-ring, install the oil screen.
  18.  
  19. Install the oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  22.  
  23. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
  24.  

CL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.

    Oil pump from the front of the engine

To install:

  1. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the mounting surface of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump, using new O-rings. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump pickup screen
     
    Oil pan and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and torque the bolt to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Wait at least 30 minutes after completion of procedure before refilling the engine with oil. The waiting period is to allow the silicone sealant (liquid gasket) to cure.

  11. Refill the engine with oil.

  13. Start the engine and check the engine for leaks.

Integra Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Be sure the crankshaft is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the No. 1 cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Any time the oil pump is removed, the front oil seal should be replaced.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor (if necessary)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Oil pan
     
    Pickup screen
     
    Oil pump from the front of the engine

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the mounting surface of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump, using new O-rings. Tighten the 8 x 1.25mm bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm), tighten the 6 x 1.0mm bolts to 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    WARNING
    The B18B1, B18C1 and B18C5 engines use different oil pumps, be sure that you have the correct oil pump. Match the crankshaft timing mark on the new oil pump with the timing mark on the old oil pump, because the timing marks are in different locations. If an oil pump is used with the timing mark in the wrong position the pistons may contact the valves.

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump pickup screen
     
    Oil pan and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft timing belt gear
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and torque the bolt to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Timing belt cover
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Wait at least 30 minutes after completion of procedure before refilling the engine with oil. The waiting period is to allow the silicone sealant (liquid gasket) to cure.
  10.  
  11. Refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check the engine for leaks.
  14.  
  15. Turn off engine and check the oil level. Top off the oil level if necessary.

NSX

To install:

  1. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump

  5. Install or connect the following: Oil pump and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)Oil pass pipe and joint with new O-rings and torque the bolts to 108 inch lbs.   7. Refill the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.

NSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Oil filter assembly
     
    Front exhaust manifold (if equipped with a manual transmission)
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil screen
     
    Baffle plate
     
    Oil pass pipe and joint
     
    Oil pump
     
    Oil seal from the oil pump
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install a new oil seal in the oil pump
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket to the mounting surface of the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Oil pass pipe and joint with new O-rings and torque the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Baffle plate and torque the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Oil screen and torque the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Oil pan and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Front exhaust manifold (if removed) and torque the nuts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm)
     
    Oil filter assembly
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Timing belt
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

RSX
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump chain tensioner
     
    Oil pump
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump
     
    Oil pump chain tensioner
     
    Oil pan
     

  2.  
  3. Wait 30 minutes, then fill the engine with oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

TSX
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Turn the crankshaft to position the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump chain tensioner, and discard
     

  10.  
  11. Secure the rear balancer shaft by inserting a 6mm pin into the maintenance hole in the lower balancer shaft holder and through the rear balancer shaft

  12.  

To install:

  1. make sure the No. 1 piston is still at TDC.
  2.  
  3. Align the dowel pin on the rear balancer shaft wit the mark on the oil pump
  4.  
  5. Secure the rear balancer shaft by inserting a 6mm pin into the maintenance hole in the lower balancer shaft holder and through the rear balancer shaft
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Engine oil to the threads of the oil pump sprocket mounting bolt
     
    Oil pump and pump sprocket, loosely. Remove the 6mm pin.
     
    Oil pump mounting bolts and tighten as shown in the illustration

  8.  
  9. Squeeze a new oil pump chain tensioner then install the set clip on it. The set clip is provided with the oil pump chain tensioner

    New oil pump chain tensioner and tighten the bolts to 8.7 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Remove the set clip from the tensioner.

  10.  
  11. Fill the crankcase with the proper amount of new engine oil.
  12.
