Removal & Installation



RSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the crankshaft pulley so that the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of its compression stroke.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels and tires
     
    Splash shield
     
    Drive belt
     
    Cylinder head cover
     

  6.  
  7. Hold the crankshaft pulley with holder handle 07JAB-001020A and holder attachment 07NAB-001040A, then remove the pulley bolt with a 19mm socket and breaker bar.

    Oil cooler hose joint pipe from the water pump, K20A2 engines
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector and Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve connector
     
    VTC oil control solenoid valve
     

  8.  
  9. Support the engine under the oil pan with a jack and block of wood.

    Ground cable and upper bracket
     
    Side engine mounting bracket
     
    Retaining bolts and timing chain case

  11. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley.
  12.  
  13. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner.
  14.  
  15. Align the holes on the lock and auto-tensioner, then insert a 0.06 in. (1.5mm) pin into the hole. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to hold the pin.

    NOTE
    Do not let the timing chain near any magnetic fields.

To install:

  1. Set the crankshaft to TDC. Align the TDC mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the pointer on the cylinder block.
  2.  
  3. Set the camshafts to TDC. The punch mark (arrow) on the VTC actuator and punch mark on the exhaust camshaft sprocket should be at the top. Align the TDC marks on the VTC actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket with the colored piece aligned with the punch mark on the crankshaft sprocket

    Timing chain guide A and tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Tensioner arm and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Auto-tensioner. Tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Timing chain guide B and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Check the timing chain case oil seal for damage and replace if necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil liquid gasket material from the chain case mating surfaces, bolts and bolt holes.
  12.  
  13. Apply liquid gasket part no. 08718-0009, evenly to the cylinder block mating surface chain case and the inner threads of the holes. Apply liquid gasket to the cylinder block upper surface contact areas on the chain case and to the oil pan mating surface of the chain case and inner threads of the holes.

  15. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    When installing the chain case, do not slide the bottom surface on the oil pan mounting surface.



    New O-ring on the timing chain case. Set the edge of the chain case to the edge of the oil pan, then install the case on the cylinder block. Tighten the case bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     



    Side engine mount bracket and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (44 m)
     
    Upper bracket, then tighten the bolts/nuts in sequence as shown in the illustration

  17. Clean the crankshaft pulley and pulley bolt, then apply lubrication to the pulley bolt and washer.

    Crankshaft pulley and hold the pulley with the holder handle and holder attachment. Using a 19mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the pulley bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).

TSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC).

  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Turn the crankshaft pulley so its Top Dead Center (TDC) mark lines up with the pointer.

  11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Make sure the No. 1 piston TDC marks on the VTC actuator and exhaust camshaft are aligned.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Front tires and wheels
     
    Splash shield
     
    Drive belt
     
    Cylinder head cover
     



    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector
     
    Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve connector
     
    VTC oil control solenoid valve
     

  12.  
  13. Support the engine with a suitable jack with a wooden block under the oil pan.

    Ground cable and upper bracket
     
    Side engine mount bracket
     
    Chain cover/case

  15. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Align the holes on the lock (A) and the auto-tensioner (B), then place a 1.5mm pin into the holes. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin.

  19. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not place the timing chain near any magnetic fields.



    Auto-tensioner
     
    Timing chain guide B (top guide)
     
    Timing chain guide A and tensioner arm
     
    Timing chain

To install:

  1. Set the crankshaft to TDC. Align the TDC mark (A) on the crankshaft sprocket with the pointer (B) on the cylinder block.

  3. Set the camshafts to TDC. The punch mark (A) on the VTC actuator and the punch mark (B) on the exhaust camshaft (C) should be at the top. Align the TDC marks (C) on the VTC actuator and exhaust camshaft sprockets.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Timing chain the crankshaft sprocket with the colored link of the chain aligned with the mark on the crank sprocket
     
    Timing chain on the VTC actuator and exhaust camshaft sprocket with the punch marks aligned with the center of the 2 colored links
     
    Timing chain guide A and tensioner arm. Tighten the guide bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the tensioner arm retainer to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Auto-tensioner and tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Timing chain guide B and tighten the retainers to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the chain cover seal for damage and replace if necessary. Clean and dry the chain cover mating surfaces.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Make sure to install the components within 5 minutes of applying the sealer.


    NOTE
    When installing the chain case, do not slide the bottom surface on the oil pan mounting surface.



    Liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0009 evenly to the cylinder block mating surface of the timing chain cover and the inner threads of the holes
     
    Liquid gasket to the cylinder block upper surface contact areas on the chain cover and the oil pan mating surface of the chain cover in the inner threads of the holes
     



    New O-ring the timing chain cover. Set the edge of the cover to the edge of the oil pan, then install the cover on the engine block. Tighten the retainers to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     



    Side engine mounting bracket and tighten the retainers to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Upper bracket, then tighten the bolts/nuts as shown in the illustration

  13. Fill the engine cooling system and connect the negative battery cable.
