Removal & Installation



1.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following: Timing beltCamshaft pulleysRear timing belt cover5 water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump

    Timing belt
     
    Camshaft pulleys
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    5 water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Water pump and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)Rear timing belt coverCamshaft pulleysTiming belt

    Water pump and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    Camshaft pulleys
     
    Timing belt
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with coolant and bleed the air from the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine and check for cooling system leaks.
  8.  

2.0L Engines
2.4L Engine
2001-03 TL Models

NOTE
Perform this service operation with the engine cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front splash panel.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt. Inspect the timing belt for any signs of damage or oil and coolant contamination. Replace the timing belt if there is any doubt about its condition.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water pump bolts. Then, remove the water pump and sprocket assembly from the engine block.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump with a new O-ring. Use new bolts and tighten the 6mm mounting bolts evenly to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. If removed, install the timing belt rear cover and camshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the timing belt tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt and timing belt covers
     
    Accessory drive belts
     

  8.  
  9. Close the cooling system drain plug. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperature, check for leaks, and top off as necessary.
  14.  

2001-04 RL Models

NOTE
Perform this service operation with the engine cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front splash panel.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt. Inspect the timing belt for any signs of damage or oil and coolant contamination. Replace the timing belt if there is any doubt about its condition.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left camshaft pulley and back cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water pump bolts. Then, remove the water pump and sprocket assembly from the engine block.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump with a new O-ring. Use new bolts and tighten the 6mm mounting bolts evenly to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. If removed, install the timing belt rear cover and camshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the timing belt tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt and timing belt covers
     
    Accessory drive belts
     

  8.  
  9. Close the cooling system drain plug. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperature, check for leaks, and top off as necessary.

2004-06 TL & 2005-06 RL
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt adjuster.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump by removing the five bolts.
  10.  
  11. Inspect and clean the O-ring groove and the mating surface of the engine block.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump with a new O-ring in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the bolts to 8.7 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Refill the radiator with engine coolant, then bleed the air from the cooling system.

3.0L, 3.2L And 3.5L Engines
CL Models

NOTE

  7. Install or connect the following:

  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Timing belt
     
    Camshaft pulleys
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    5 water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump and tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Rear timing belt cover
     
    Camshaft pulleys
     
    Timing belt
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with coolant and bleed the air from the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine and check for cooling system leaks.

  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    For the K20A3 (base) engine, 6 bolts securing the water pump
     
    For the K20A2 (Type-S) engine, oil cooler joint pipe and the 7 bolts securing the water pump
     
    Water pump
     

  8.  
  9. Clean and inspect the O-ring groove and mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with a new O-ring. Tighten the mounting bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Drive belt
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the engine with coolant and bleed the air from the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Run the engine and check for cooling system leaks.
  8.  

TSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley
     
    6 water pump mounting bolts, then the pump and O-ring seal

  7. Clean the seal groove and mating surfaces.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump, with a new seal. Tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.
