Control Arm Bushing Replacement




NOTE
The bushings are an integral part of the control arm and are not replaceable. If they are damaged the control arm should be replaced.

Removal & Installation



2001-03 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Lower damper fork bolt
     
    Stabilizer bar from the arm
     
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Radius rod from the lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm mounting bolts
     
    Lower arm from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm and torque the bolts to 40 ft lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Lower damper fork bolt and torque it to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Radius rod and torque the bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  4.  

2001-04 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Lower damper fork bolt
     
    Stabilizer bar from the arm
     
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Radius rod from the lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm mounting bolts
     
    Lower arm from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm and torque the bolts to 40 ft lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Lower damper fork bolt and torque it to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Radius rod and torque the bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  4.  

2004-06 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the damper fork from the damper and lower arm.
    NOTE
    During installation, insert the damper fork into the damper lower end so the aligning tab (D) is aligned with the slot (E) in the damper fork. Replace the damper fork mounting nut (F) with a new one.

  6.  
  7. Remove the flange nut while holding the joint pin with a hex wrench then disconnect the stabilizer link from the lower arm.

  9. Remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut, then remove the nut.
    NOTE
    To avoid damaging the ball joint, install the tool illustrated on the threads of the ball joint.

  11. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover.

  13. Do not force or hammer on the lower arm, or pry between the lower arm and knuckle. You could damage the ball joint.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower arm ball joint from the knuckle using the tools shown.
  16.  
  17. Remove the flange bolts, nuts and washers, then remove the lower arm.

To install:

  1. Install the lower arm in the reverse order of removal, and note the following:
    1. Check the collar sleeve (A) on the lower arm (B). Replace the lower arm if the collar/sleeve is loose or damaged.

    3. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the knuckle.
    4.  
    5. Tighten all mounting hardware to the torque specified in the accompanying illustrations.
    6.  
    7. Before connecting the lower ball joint to the lower arm, degrease the threaded section and tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the lower arm connecting hole, the threaded section and mating surface of the castle nut.
    8.  
    9. First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle.
    10.  
    11. Torque the castle nut to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
    12.  
    13. Install a new cotter pin on the castle nut after torquing.
    14.  
    15. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust if necessary.

2005-06 RL Models
  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the holder from the knuckle.

  5. Remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut and then remove the nut.
    NOTE
    To avoid damaging the ball joint, install a hex nut on the threads of the ball joint. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover. Do not force or hammer on the lower arm, or pry between the lower arm and knuckle. You could damage the ball joint. Insert the new cotter pin into the ball joint pin hole from the rear to the front of vehicle, and bend its end as shown.

  7. Disconnect the lower arm ball joint from the holder using the ball joint remover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the self-locking nut and washer, then remove the damper fork mounting nut and bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flange bolts and self-locking nut, then remove the lower arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. In case of loosening lower arm bracket, follow the steps to retighten its bolts, refer to the illustration for bolt locations:
    1. Lightly tighten the three bolts.
    2.  
    3. Align the center of the cam (B) to the edge (C).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the adjusting bolt (D).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the adjusting bolt (E).
    8.  
    9. Tighten the adjusting bolt (F).

  3. Install the lower arm in the reverse order of removal, and note the following:

  7. Before connecting the lower ball joint to the holder, degrease the threaded section and tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the holder connecting hole, the threaded section and mating surface of the castle nut.

  9. Use a new self-locking nut on reassembly.
  10.  
  11. First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Tighten all mounting hardware to the specified torque values.
  14.  
  15. Torque the castle nut to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
  16.  
  17. Install a new cotter pin on the castle nut after torquing.
  18.  
  19. Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel.
  20.  
  21. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust if necessary.

    Lower control arm and torque the bolts to 40 ft lbs. (54 Nm)

    Stabilizer bar and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

    Control arm adjusting bolt
     
    Control arm from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm to the vehicle and torque the adjusting bolt to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm)
     
    Ball joint to the compliance pivot assembly and torque the nut to 40-47 ft. lbs. (54-64 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link and torque the nut to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm)
     
    Lower strut mounting bolt and torque it to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm)
     
    Steering knuckle to the control arm and torque the nut to 40-47 ft. lbs. (54-64 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.

(83 Nm) and 12x1.25mm bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)Lower ball joint castle nut: 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm)Stabilizer link-to-control arm flange nut: 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)Insert the damper fork into the damper lower end so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in the damper fork. Use a new damper fork mounting nutLower damper fork mounting bolt: 47 ft. lbs.     Stabilizer link from the lower control arm
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint
     
    Lower control arm from the knuckle using a suitable separator tool
     
    Flange bolts and lower control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following steps and torque specifications:

    Lower control arm flange bolts: 14x1.5mm bolt to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) and 12x1.25mm bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint castle nut: 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link-to-control arm flange nut: 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
     
    Insert the damper fork into the damper lower end so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in the damper fork. Use a new damper fork mounting nut
