Bushing Replacement




NOTE
The bushings are an integral part of the control arm and are not replaceable. If they are damaged the control arm should be replaced.

Removal & Installation



2001-03 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Front damper/strut
     
    Wheel speed sensor bracket from the upper control arm
     
    Cotter pin from the upper ball joint and loosen the nut
     
    Upper ball joint from the knuckle, using a suitable separator tool
     
    Upper control arm bolts or nuts, as applicable
     
    Upper control arm from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm
     
    Upper control arm bolts: 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm)
     
    Upper control arm-to-chassis nuts and torque them to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 29-35 ft. lbs. (39-47 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
  4.  

2001-04 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Front damper/strut
     
    Wheel speed sensor bracket from the upper control arm
     
    Cotter pin from the upper ball joint and loosen the nut
     
    Upper ball joint from the knuckle, using a suitable separator tool
     
    Upper control arm bolts or nuts, as applicable
     
    Upper control arm from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm
     
    Upper control arm bolts: 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm)
     
    Upper control arm-to-chassis nuts and torque them to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 29-35 ft. lbs. (39-47 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
  4.  

2004-06 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front strut assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel sensor bracket from the upper arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin from the upper arm ball joint, then loosen the nut.
    NOTE
    During installation, insert the new cotter pin into the ball joint pin hole from the front to the rear of vehicle, and bend its end as shown.

  9. Disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using the tool illustrated.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper arm mounting bolts then remove the upper arm.

To install:

  1. Install the upper arm by inserting a 6mm diameter 300mm long rod into the positioning holes and place the upper arm on the rod to position it before tightening the upper arm mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal, keeping in mind the following:
    1. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the knuckle.
    2.  
    3. First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle.

    5. Tighten all mounting hardware to specified torque values.
    6.  
    7. Torque the castle nut to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.

    9. Install a new cotter pin on the castle nut after tightening.

2005-06 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front strut assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel sensor bracket from the upper arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin from the upper arm ball joint, then loosen the nut.
    NOTE
    During installation, insert the new cotter pin into the ball joint pin hole from the front to the rear of vehicle, and bend its end.

  9. Disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using a suitable ball joint separator tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper arm mounting bolts then remove the upper arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper arm by inserting a 6mm diameter 300mm long rod into the positioning holes and place the upper arm on the rod to position it before tightening the upper arm mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal, keeping in mind the following:

Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle. Tighten the upper arm bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm). Tighten ball joint nut to 43-51 ft. lbs. (59-69 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Front damper/strut

    Cotter pin from the upper ball joint and loosen the nut
     
    Upper ball joint from the knuckle, using a suitable separator tool
     
    Upper control arm bolts or nuts, as applicable
     
    Upper control arm from the vehicle

    Upper control arm bolts or nuts, as applicable
     
    Upper control arm from the vehicle

    Front wheel
