Removal & Installation

2004-06 TL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel nuts and front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Lift up the locking tab on the spindle nut, then remove the nut.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transmission fluid, then reinstall the drain plug using a new washer:
  8.  
  9. Remove exhaust pipe.
  10.  
  11. Hold the stabilizer ball joint pin with a hex wrench, and remove the flange nut. Separate the front stabilizer link from the lower arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the self-locking nut, 12 mm flange bolt, and 10 mm flange bolt, then remove the damper fork.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cotter pin from the lower arm ball joint, and remove the nut.
    NOTE
    To avoid damaging the ball joint, install the tool illustrated on the threads of the ball joint. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover. Do not force or hammer on the lower arm, or pry between the lower arm and the knuckle. You could damage the ball joint.

  17. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower arm using the tool illustrated.
    NOTE
    The collar on the lower arm is removed with ball joint, the lower arm must be replaced.

  19. Pull the knuckle outward, and remove the outboard joint from the front wheel hub using a plastic hammer
  20.  
  21. On the left driveshaft, pry the inboard joint from the differential case with a prybar.
  22.  
  23. On the right driveshaft, drive the inboard joint off of the intermediate shaft with a drift and hammer.
  24.  
  25. Remove the driveshaft as an assembly.
    NOTE
    Do not pull on the driveshaft, because the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the driveshaft straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.

To install:

  1. Install a new set ring in the set ring groove of the left driveshaft.
  2.  
  3. Apply 0.02-0.04 ounces (0.5-1 gram) of grease to the whole splined surface of the right driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. After applying the grease, remove the grease from the splined grooves at intervals of 2-3 splines and from the set ring groove so that air can bleed from the intermediate shaft.
  6.  
  7. Clean the areas where the driveshaft contacts the differential thoroughly with solvent and dry with compressed air.
  8.  
  9. Insert the inboard end of the driveshaft into the differential or intermediate shaft until the new set ring locks in the groove.
  10.  
  11. Install the outboard joint into the front hub.
  12.  
  13. Clean off any grease from the ball joint tapered section and threads, then install the knuckle onto the lower arm. Torque the new castle nut to the 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm) on 2004 models or 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm) on 2005-06 models, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the nut by loosening it.
    NOTE
    Make sure the ball joint boot is not damaged or cracked.

  15. Install the new cotter pin into the ball joint pin hole, and bend the cotter pin.
  16.  
  17. Install the damper fork over the driveshaft and onto the lower arm. Install the damper in the damper fork so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in the damper fork. Loosely install the flange bolt.

  19. Loosely install the flange bolt and a new self-locking nut.
  20.  
  21. Connect the front stabilizer link to the lower arm. Hold the stabilizer link ball joint pin with a hex wrench, and tighten the new flange nut.
  22.  
  23. Install the exhaust pipe.
  24.  
  25. Install a new spindle nut, then tighten the nut to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm). After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the driveshaft.
  26.  
  27. Install the front wheel.
  28.  
  29. Turn the front wheel by hand, and make sure there is no interference between the driveshaft and related parts.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the flange bolt and the self-locking nut with the vehicle's weight on the damper.
  32.  
  33. Refill the transmission with recommended transmission fluid:
  34.  
  35. Check the front wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary
  36.  

2005-06 RL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Lift up the locking tab on the spindle nut, then remove the nut.
  6.  
  7. Drain the transmission fluid, then reinstall the drain plug using a new washer:
  8.  
  9. Remove exhaust pipe.
  10.  
  11. Hold the stabilizer ball joint pin with a hex wrench, and remove the flange nut. Separate the front stabilizer link from the lower arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the self-locking nut, 12 mm flange bolt, and 10 mm flange bolt, then remove the damper fork.
  14.  
  15. Remove the knuckle holder bolt and nut.
  16.  
  17. Pull the knuckle outward, and remove the outboard joint from the front wheel hub using a plastic hammer.
  18.  
  19. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  20.  
  21. On the left driveshaft, pry the inboard joint from the differential case with a prybar.
  22.  
  23. On the right driveshaft, drive the inboard joint off of the intermediate shaft with a drift and hammer.
  24.  
  25. Remove the driveshaft as an assembly.
    NOTE
    Do not pull on the driveshaft, because the inboard joint may come apart. Pull the driveshaft straight out to avoid damaging the oil seal.

To install:

  1. Install a new set ring in the set ring groove of the left driveshaft.
  2.

  15. Insert the inboard end of the driveshaft into the differential or intermediate shaft until the new set ring locks in the groove.
  16.  
  17. Install the damper fork over the driveshaft and onto the lower arm. Install the damper in the damper fork so the aligning tab is aligned with the slot in the damper fork. Loosely install the flange bolt.
  18.  
  19. Loosely install the flange bolt and a new self-locking nut.
  20.  
  21. Connect the front stabilizer link to the lower arm. Hold the stabilizer link ball joint pin with a hex wrench, and tighten the new flange nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install a new spindle nut, then tighten the nut to 242 ft. lbs. (349 Nm). After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the driveshaft.
  24.  
  25. Install the front wheel.
  26.  
  27. Turn the front wheel by hand, and make sure there is no interference between the driveshaft and related parts.
  28.  
  29. Tighten the flange bolt and the self-locking nut with the vehicle's weight on the damper.
  30.  
  31. Refill the transmission with recommended transmission fluid:

  33. Check the front wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary
  34.  

CL, TSX, 2001-04 RL & 2001-03 TL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential or transmission lubricant.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel(s)
     
    Axle nut
     
    Strut fork
     
    Lower ball joint from the control arm
     

  6.  
  7. Pull the knuckle outward and remove the halfshaft outboard CV-joint from the knuckle using a plastic mallet.
  8.  
  9. Using a small pry bar carefully pry out the inboard CV-joint approximately 1 / 2 in. (13mm) in order to force the spring clip out of the groove in the differential side gears.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the oil seal. Do not pull on the inboard CV-joint, it may come apart.

  10.  
  11. Pull the halfshaft out of the differential or the intermediate shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the halfshaft from the wheel hub.

To install:


NOTE
Always use a new set ring whenever the driveshaft is being installed. Be sure the driveshaft locks in the differential side gear groove and that the CV-joint stub-axle bottoms in the differential or the intermediate shaft.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Outboard joint to the wheel hub
     
    Inboard joint with a new set ring into the differential or intermediate shaft until the set ring locks in the groove
     
    Ball joint to the control arm and torque the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)
     
    Strut fork and torque the pinch bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) and the lower bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Axle nut and torque it to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)
     
    Wheel(s)
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the transmission or differential with the correct amount and type of fluid.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  8.  

Integra & RSX Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential or transmission lubricant.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel(s)
     
    Axle nut
     
    Strut fork
     
    Lower ball joint from the control arm
     

  6.  
  7. Pull the knuckle outward and remove the halfshaft outboard CV-joint from the knuckle using a plastic mallet.
  8.  
  9. Using a small pry bar carefully pry out the inboard CV-joint approximately 1 / 2 in. (13mm) in order to force the spring clip out of the groove in the differential side gears.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the oil seal. Do not pull on the inboard CV-joint, it may come apart.

  11. Pull the halfshaft out of the differential or the intermediate shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the halfshaft from the wheel hub.

To install:


NOTE
Always use a new set ring whenever the driveshaft is being installed. Be sure the driveshaft locks in the differential side gear groove and that the CV-joint stub-axle bottoms in the differential or the intermediate shaft.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Outboard joint to the wheel hub
     
    Inboard joint with a new set ring into the differential or intermediate shaft until the set ring locks in the groove
     
    Ball joint to the control arm and torque the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)
     
    Strut fork and torque the pinch bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) and the lower bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Axle nut and torque it to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm)
     
    Wheel(s)
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the transmission or differential with the correct amount and type of fluid.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  8.  

NSX Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential or transmission lubricant.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Axle nut
     
    Brake hose from the caliper and from the knuckle
     
    Wheel sensor from the knuckle and lower control arm
     
    Parking brake cable from the control arm
     
    Toe control arm from the knuckle
     
    Damper mounting nut
     
    Stabilizer link
     
    Lower control arm from the sub-frame
     
    Outboard joint from the knuckle
     
    Inboard joint from the differential or intermediate shaft using a suitable prytool
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Inboard joint with a new set ring to the differential or intermediate shaft
     
    Outboard joint to the knuckle
     
    Lower control arm to the sub-frame and torque the bolts to 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link and torque the nut to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm)
     
    Damper mounting nut and torque it to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm)
     
    Toe control arm to the knuckle and torque the bolt to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm)
     
    Parking brake cable and torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Wheel sensor and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Brake hose and torque the bracket bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and the banjo bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
     
    Axle nut and torque it to 242 ft. lbs. (329 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel(s)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transaxle with the proper amount and type of fluid.
  4.  
  5. Fill and bleed the brake system.
  6.  
  7. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  8.  

All Models Except NSX



NSX



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Drain the differential or transmission lubricant.
