TL Models
2001 - 03 Models

NOTE
Be sure to acquire the anti - theft code for the radio; then, write down the frequencies for the preset buttons.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 3 minutes for the SRS module to deplete its energy.

  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  8.  
  9. In the engine compartment, remove the heater housing-to-cowl nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument panel by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Clips and remove the dashboard side cover, located at the driver-s side
     
    Lower dashboard cover screw, detach the clips and remove the lower dashboard cover
     
    Console panel screws and the console panel
     
    Glove box-to-instrument panel screw; then, remove the damper from the glove box
     
    Glove box stop located at each side while holding the glove box
     
    Both glove box-to-instrument panel screws and the glove box
     
    Clips and remove the dashboard side cover located at the passenger-s side
     
    Glove box cover-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the glove box cover
     
    Rear console and the front console cover
     
    4 audio unit-to-instrument panel screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the audio unit
     
    Pry out the front pillar trim at both sides
     
    Bolts at the rear vent duct, disconnect the clips and the OBD - II connector; then, detach the tabs and remove the rear vent duct
     
    Steering column cover screws and the covers
     
    Steering column electrical connectors
     
    Steering joint cover clamp, screws and the cover
     
    Steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts and lower the steering column
     
    Instrument panel-s electrical connectors and clips
     
    Instrument panel-to-chassis bolts and the instrument panel
     

  12.  
  13. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  14.  
  15. Remove the evaporator housing by removing or disconnecting the following:

    Refrigerant lines from the evaporator core. Discard the O - rings and plug the openings to prevent contamination.
     
    Electrical connectors from the evaporator housing
     
    Evaporator housing-to-chassis screws, nut and bolts; then, remove the evaporator housing
     

  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Heater housing-to-chassis bolts and the heater housing
     
    Mode control motor-to-heater housing screws, the linkage and the motor
     
    Bracket-to-heater housing screws and the brackets
     
    Upper-to-lower heater housing screws and separate the housings
     
    Heater core

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core
     
    Upper-to-lower heater housing and install the heater housing screws
     
    Brackets and the bracket-to-heater housing screws
     
    Mode control motor, the linkage and the motor-to-heater housing screws
     
    Heater housing and the heater housing-to-chassis bolts
     

  2.  
  3. Install the evaporator housing by installing or connecting the following:

    Evaporator housing and the evaporator housing-to-chassis screws, nut and bolts
     
    Electrical connectors to the evaporator housing
     
    Refrigerant lines to the evaporator core, make sure to use new O - rings
     

  4.  
  5. Install the instrument panel by installing or connecting the following:

    Instrument panel and the instrument panel-to-chassis bolts
     
    Instrument panel-s electrical connectors and clips
     
    Steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) and bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm)
     
    Steering joint cover and the cover clamp and screws
     
    Steering column electrical connectors
     
    Steering column covers and the cover screws
     
    Rear vent duct, connect the clips and the OBD - II connector, attach the tabs and install the bolts
     
    Front pillar trim. On both sides.
     
    Audio unit, connect the electrical connectors and install the 4 audio unit-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Rear console and the front console cover
     
    Glove box cover, connect the electrical connectors and install the glove box cover-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Dashboard side cover and attach the clips at the passenger-s side
     
    Both glove box and the glove box-to-instrument panel screws
     
    Glove box stop (located at each side), while holding the glove box
     
    Damper to the glove box and the glove box-to-instrument panel screw
     
    Console panel and the console panel screws
     
    Lower dashboard cover, attach the clips and install the lower dashboard cover screw
     
    Dashboard side cover and attach the clips at the driver-s side
     
    Heater housing-to-cowl nut located in the engine compartment
     
    Heater hoses to the heater core
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Evacuate, charge and leak test the air conditioning system.
  12.  
  13. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  14.  

2004 - 06 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
    NOTE
    Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system, then write down the radio channel presets.

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the suction and receiver lines from the evaporator core
  6.  
  7. From under the hood, open the cable clamp (A), then disconnect the heater valve cable (B) from the heater valve arm (C). Turn the heater valve arm to the fully opened position as shown.

  9. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove the mounting nut from the heater unit. Take care not to damage or bend the fuel lines and the brake lines, etc.
  14.  
  15. Remove the dashboard as follows:
    1. Remove the driver' and passenger seats.
    2.  
    3. If equipped with a manual transmission, lower the shift lever boot to release the hooks from the boot, then remove the shift knob.
    4.  
    5. Detach the clips and release the hooks by carefully inserting a trim tool between the HVAC panel and the center console trim and prying gently on both sides.
    6.  
    7. Open the console box lid then remove the console mat and screws.
    8.  
    9. Slide the rear section of the center console rearward to release the hooks.
    10.  
    11. Lift up the rear of the console.
    12.  
    13. Release the harness retainer clip from the air duct, and disconnect the accessory power socket connector and the light bulb socket connector, and then remove the rear section of the center console.
    14.  
    15. Remove the drivers side lower cover, by adjusting the steering column upward.
    16.  
    17. Remove the clip, and disconnect the in-car temperature sensor connector and air hose. Gently pull out the bottom of the dashboard lower cover to detach the clips and release the pin and hooks.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the VSA OFF switch connector, power mirror switch connector, and trunk lid opener switch connector.
    20.  
    21. To remove the glove box, release the clips by gently pulling the bottom of the glove box housing out and disconnect the trunk lid opener main switch connector and light bulb connector.
    22.  
    23. Remove the kick panels.
    24.  
    25. Remove the A-pillar trim
    26.  
    27. To remove the steering column, align the front wheels straight ahead position
    28.  
    29. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel, then disconnect the driver's airbag 4P connector from the cable reel.
    30.  
    31. Remove the two Torx bolts using a Torx T30 bit.
    32.  
    33. Disconnect the horn switch connector, then remove the driver's airbag.
    34.  
    35. Disconnect the cruise control set/resume switch, audio remote switch and HFL/HFL-voice control switch connectors (if equipped).
    36.  
    37. Loosen the steering wheel bolt.
    38.  
    39. Install a commercially available steering wheel puller on the steering and remove the wheel.
      CAUTION
      Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel. If you thread the puller bolts into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt.

    41. Remove the column covers.
    42.  
    43. Remove the steering joint cover.
    44.  
    45. Release the tilt/telescopic lever, and adjust the steering column to full tilt up position, and to the full telescopic in position. Tighten the tilt/telescopic lever.
    46.  
    47. Hold the slider shaft (A) on the column with a piece of wire (B) between the joint yoke (C) of the slider shaft and joint yoke (D) of the upper shaft to prevent the slider shaft from pulling out.

    49. Release the tilt/telescopic lever, and adjust the steering column to the full telescopic out position, then tighten the tilt/telescopic lever.
    50.  
    51. Disconnect the wire harness connectors from the combination switch assembly.
    52.  
    53. Remove the combination switch assembly from the steering column shaft by removing the screws.
    54.  
    55. Disconnect the connectors from the ignition switch, and release the wire harness clips from the steering column.
    56.  
    57. Remove the steering joint bolt, then disconnect the steering joint from the pinion shaft.
    58.  
    59. Remove the steering column by removing the attaching nuts and bolts. If the lower slide shaft is removed, slip it into the upper shaft by aligning the marks.
    60.  
    61. If equipped with an automatic transmission, shift the transmission into the R position and remove the nut securing the shift cable end.
    62.  
    63. Press the holder lock release (A), and pull out the socket holder (B) to remove the shift cable (C) from the shift lever bracket base (D). Do not remove the shift cable by pulling on the shift cable guide (E).

    65. Disconnect shift lock solenoid connector and transmission gear selection switch/park pin switch connector.
    66.  
    67. Remove the harness clamps.
    68.  
    69. Remove the shift lever assembly.
    70.  
    71. Detach the clips, then remove the rear vent duct
    72.  
    73. Remove the clips, then pull back the carpet.
    74.  
    75. Remove the rear joint vent ducts on both sides.
    76.  
    77. Disconnect the connector and remove the bolts, then remove the bracket.
    78.  
    79. Remove the heater ducts.
    80.  
    81. Disconnect the SRS connectors and remove the Torx bolts, then pull out the SRS unit.
    82.  
    83. From under the dash, disconnect any wiring harness connectors that would interfere with dashboard removal.
      NOTE
      Lift the white wire harness connector locks before trying to remove the connectors from the fuse box.

    84.  
    85. Disconnect the parking brake switch connector.
    86.  
    87. Using a T30 Torx bit, remove the ground bolt.
    88.  
    89. If equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the park pin switch connector.
    90.  
    91. From under the dash, disconnect the ECM/PCM connector, antenna lead, engine wire harness connector and A/C sub harness connector.
    92.  
    93. If equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the shift lock solenoid connector
    94.  
    95. From under the dash, disconnect the passenger's door wire harness connectors, the three floor wire harness connectors (if the vehicle has a navigation system) or the one floor wire harness connector (if the vehicle does not have a navigation system), stereo amplifier connectors, and ETC unit connector.
    96.  
    97. Detach all of the harness and connector clips.
    98.  
    99. Remove bolts, then remove the brake pedal support member.
    100.  
    101. Unbolt the parking brake handle assembly and the center console bracket. Do not disconnect the parking brake cable; move the assembly to the side of the shifter.
    102.  
    103. Remove the bolts, then remove the center bracket.

    105. From outside the driver's door, remove the caps, then remove the bolts and clips, then lift up on the dashboard to release it from the guide pins.
      NOTE
      Before removing the dashboard, make sure all the harnesses have been disconnected.

    107. Carefully remove the dashboard through the front door opening.

Disconnect the connectors (A) from the driver's mode control motor, the driver's air mix control motor, the evaporator temperature sensor, the power transistor, the passenger's mode control motor, passenger's air mix control motor, and the recirculation control motor, then remove the wire harness clips (B), the wire harness (C), and the carpet clip (D). Refer to the illustration for component locations.
  18.  
  19. Remove the heater ducts. then remove the mounting nuts and the blower-heater unit.
  20.  
  21. Remove the self-tapping screws, the evaporator temperature sensor (A) and the joint duct (B). Remove the self-tapping screws, then remove the passenger's heater outlet (C), and the heater core cover (D). Remove the self-tapping screws and the passenger's air mix control motor (E). Remove the self-tapping screws, the heater pipe brackets (F), the grommets (G) and carefully pull out the heater core (H) so you don't bend the inlet and outlet pipes. Refer to the illustration for component locations.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. refer to the illustrations accompanying the removal procedure for component locations and torque specifications.
  2.  

TSX Models

NOTE

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 3 minutes for the SRS module to deplete its energy.

  4.  
  5. Properly drain the cooling system. Properly discharge the air conditioning system using an approved refrigerant recover/recycling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Suction and receiver lines from the evaporator core
     

  8.  
  9. From under the hood, open the cable clamp and disconnect the heater valve cable from the heater valve arm. Turn the heater valve arm to the fully opened position.

  11. Position a drain pan under the hoses. Slide the hose clamps back Remove the bolt and water valve bracket, then disconnect the inlet and outlet heater hoses from the heater unit.
    WARNING
    Do not let any coolant that drains from the hoses to contact any painted surfaces or electrical parts. Immediately wipe up and coolant that spills.

  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Mounting nut from the heater unit. Do not damage or bend the fuel lines or brake lines
     
    Dashboard
     
    Footrest and footrest bracket
     

  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the connectors, wire harness clips, connector clips and wire harness, after disconnecting the following:

    Driver-s side mix control motor
     
    Evaporator temperature sensor
     
    Power transistor
     
    Mode control
     
    Passenger-s air mix control motor
     

  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Heater ducts
     
    Mounting nuts and blower/heater unit
     
    Self-tapping screws and the joint ducts A and B
     
    Self-tapping screws and the passenger-s heater outlet and heater core cover
     
    Self-tapping screws, heater pipe brackets, grommets and heater pipe brackets
     
    Heater core, carefully, being sure not to bend the inlet and outlet pipes.

  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following points:

    Do not interchange the inlet and outlet heater hoses
     
    Adjust the heater valve cable
     
    Perform the PCM idle learn procedure
     
    Perform the power window control unit reset procedure

  3. Refill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Evacuate, charge and leak test the air conditioning system.
  8.  
  9. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
