  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transaxle oil. Install the drain plug with a new washer.
  6.  
  7.   3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transaxle oil. Install the drain plug with a new washer.

    Do not operate the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder has been removed.

NSX Models



2004-06 TL Models

The following tools are required to perform this procedure:



Engine support hanger, A and Reds AAR-T-12566
 
Engine hanger balance bar VSB02C000019
 
Front sub-frame adapter VSB02C000016
 

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set the wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Lock the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the support struts from both sides of the pivot ball (bolted to the hood). Secure the hood in a vertical position. Remove the right side pivot ball, and install it into the lower threaded hole, then reattach the support strut.
    NOTE
    Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position; it will damage the support strut and hood.

  8.  
  9. Remove the left rear engine compartment cover and the left side engine compartment cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right side engine compartment cover and the right rear engine compartment cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the intake manifold cover and the bulkhead cover.
  14.  
  15. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system, then write down the customer's radio channel presets. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.
  18.  
  19. Remove the battery.
  20.  
  21. Remove the air cleaner housing and resonator chamber.
  22.  
  23. Remove the battery base.
  24.  
  25. Remove the under-hood fuse/relay box.
  26.  
  27. Remove the strut bar.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the back-up light switch connector and reverse lockout solenoid connector, then remove the harness clips.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the input shaft speed sensor connector and output shaft speed sensor connector.
  32.  
  33. Remove the harness clips, then disconnect the vacuum hose.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the starter cable, then remove the starter motor.
  36.  
  37. Remove the harness bracket.
  38.  
  39. Remove the cable bracket, then disconnect the cables from the top of the transmission housing. Carefully remove both cables and the bracket together to avoid bending the cables.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the vacuum hose.
  42.  
  43. Carefully remove the slave cylinder without bending the clutch line. Do not press the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder has been removed.
  44.  
  45. Remove the engine front mount mounting nuts, engine front mount stop, and the engine front mount mounting bolt.
  46.  
  47. Remove the engine rear mount mounting nuts and engine rear mount stop.
  48.  
  49. Remove the transmission upper mounting bolts.
  50.  
  51. Remove and plug the return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once.
  52.  
  53. Remove the power steering pump outlet line from the power steering pump, and remove the hose from its clamp.
  54.  
  55. Lift and support the engine with the engine support hanger and the engine hanger balance bar:
  56.  
  57. Attach the front arm to the front cylinder head with a spacer and the 10 x 1.25 mm bolt.
  58.  
  59. Attach the rear arm to the rear cylinder head with the 8 x 1.25 mm bolt.
  60.  
  61. Remove the steering joint cover.
  62.  
  63. Make a reference mark across the steering joint and steering gearbox pinion shaft. Remove the steering joint bolt, and disconnect the steering joint by removing the steering joint toward the steering column. Hold the slider shaft on the column with a piece of wire between the joint yoke on the slider shaft to the joint yoke on the upper shaft.

  65. Remove the transmission mount bracket and ground cable.
  66.  
  67. Remove the under cover.
  68.  
  69. Drain the transmission fluid. Install the drain bolt with a new washer.
  70.  
  71. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  72.  
  73. Separate the front stabilizer link.
  74.  
  75. Remove the damper fork.
  76.  
  77. Separate the knuckle from the lower arm.
  78.  
  79. Separate the tie-rod ball joint.
  80.  
  81. Remove the left and right driveshaft inboard joints.
  82.  
  83. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  84.  
  85. Remove the rear engine lower mount mounting bolts
  86.  
  87. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  88.  
  89. Remove the transmission lower mount mounting nuts.
  90.  
  91. Remove the middle sub-frame mounting bolts.
  92.  
  93. Make the appropriate reference lines at both ends of the sub-frame that line up with the edge of the stiffeners.

  95. Support the sub-frame with the front sub-frame adapter and a jack
  96.  
  97. Remove the front suspension sub-frame stays and front suspension sub-frame.
  98.  
  99. Remove the front engine mount upper bracket.
  100.  
  101. Remove the transmission lower front mount and the transmission lower rear mount.
  102.  
  103. Remove the clutch cover.
  104.  
  105. Place the transmission jack under the transmission, and remove the transmission lower mounting bolts.
  106.  
  107. Pull the transmission away from the engine until the transmission mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate, then lower the transmission on the transmission jack.
  108.  

To install:

  1. Check that the two dowel pins are installed in the clutch housing.
  2.  
  3. Apply super high temp urea grease to the release fork and the release bearing. Install the release fork, the release bearing, and the boot.
  4.  
  5. Place the transmission on the transmission jack, and raise it to the engine level.
  6.  
  7. Install the transmission lower mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the clutch cover
  10.  
  11. Install the front engine mount upper bracket.
  12.  
  13. Support the subframe with the front subframe adapter and a jack
  14.  
  15. Install the front suspension subframe (A) and front suspension subframe stays (B).
  16.  
  17. Align the reference marks (A) with edge (B) of both rear stiffer (C), and tighten the rear subframe mounting bolts, then the front bolts, and tighten the stiffener bolts to the specified torque.
  18.  
  19. Install the middle subframe mounting bolts.
  20.  
  21. Install the transmission lower front mount (A) and the transmission lower rear mount (B).
  22.  
  23. Install the transmission lower mount mounting nuts
  24.  
  25. Install the rear engine lower mount mounting bolts.

  27. Connect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  28.  
  29. Connect the return line to the power steering fluid reservoir.
  30.  
  31. Install the tie-rod ball joint.
  32.  
  33. Install the front wheels, and set them in the straight ahead position.
  34.  
  35. Connect the steering joint to the steering gearbox pinion shaft by aligning the reference mark, and remove the wire from the joint yoke.
  36.  
  37. Install the steering joint cover.
  38.  
  39. Install the intermediate shaft.
  40.  
  41. Install the left and right driveshaft inboard joints.
  42.  
  43. Install the knuckle onto the lower arm.
  44.  
  45. Install the damper fork.
  46.  
  47. Connect the front stabilizer
  48.  
  49. Install the exhaust pipe A and new gaskets (B).
  50.  
  51. Install the splash shield
  52.  
  53. Install the under cover
  54.  
  55. Lay the fender cover over the fender, then install the transmission mount bracket (A) and ground cable (B).
  56.  
  57. Remove the engine hanger and tool illustrated from the engine.
  58.  
  59. Install the transmission upper mounting bolts.
  60.  
  61. Install the engine rear mount stop.
  62.  
  63. Install the engine front mount mounting bolt (A) and the engine front mount stop (B).
  64.  
  65. Apply super high temp urea grease to the end of the cylinder rod. Install the slave cylinder. Be careful not to bend the clutch line.
  66.  
  67. Connect the vacuum hose.
  68.  
  69. Install the cable bracket and cables.
  70.  
  71. Apply a light coat of super high temp urea grease to the cable ends, and install new cotter pins.
  72.  
  73. Install the harness bracket.

RSX Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transaxle oil. Install the drain plug with a new washer.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intake manifold cover
     
    Air cleaner housing
     
    Intake air duct
     
    Battery tray
     
    Transmission ground cable
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    Reverse lockout solenoid connector
     
    Cable bracket and cable from the top of the transaxle. Remove the cables and bracket together to avoid bending the cables.
     
    Harness clips
     
    Slave cylinder, being careful not to bend the clutch line. Do not depress the clutch pedal after the slave cylinder has been removed.
     
    Engine wire harness cover by lifting up on the locktab, then sliding the harness forward off the air cleaner housing mounting bracket
     
    Water pipe mounting bolt and lower the pipe slightly
     
    Loosen the air cleaner housing bracket mounting bolt, then the mounting bolt
     
    Brake booster and Evaporative emission (EVAP) line brake mounting bolts and attach special tool EQS00BRSX0 to the threaded hole in the cylinder head

  8.  
  9. Install the engine support hanger to the vehicle and attach the hook to the special tool.

  11. Support the subframe with the subframe adapter and a jack.

  13. Make reference marks of the installed position on the front suspension subframe and mounting bolts, then remove the subframe.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Clutch cover. The cover will have 2 bolts on 5-speed transaxles and 3 bolts on 6-speed transaxles.
     
    Front engine mount

  17. Pull the transaxle away from the engine until the mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate, then lower the transmission on the jack.

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of the following special tools, or their equivalents: Engine hanger/adapter VSB02C000015, Engine support hanger A & Reds AAR-T-12566 and Subframe adapter VSB02C000016.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable
     
    Air cleaner housing assembly
     
    Battery base
     
    Clutch slave cylinder, but do NOT bend the clutch line. Do NOT depress the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder is removed.
     
    Cable bracket and cables from the top of the transaxle housing
     
    Countershaft speed sensor connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Reverse solenoid lockout connector
     
    Secondary Heater Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) connector and the bracket
     
    Engine front mount stop and the engine mount front mounting bolt
     
    Engine rear mount stop
     
    Right and left side steering gearbox mounting bolts
     
    Transaxle upper mounting bolts

  11. Attach Engine hanger/adapter VSB02C000015, or equivalent to the threaded holes in the cylinder head.

  13. Install the engine support hanger to the vehicle, then attach the hook to the special tool.

    Intermediate shaft
     
    Heat shield
     
    Power steering line bracket mounting bolt
     
    Power steering line from the subframe. There are 2 clamps and 1 mounting bracket bolt.
     
    Rear engine mount lower mounting bolts
     
    Transaxle lower mount mounting nuts
     
    Middle subframe mounting bolts

  17. Matchmark the ends of the subframe to the edge of the stiffeners.

  21. Suspend the steering gearbox with a suitable support, then remove the front suspension subframe stays and subframe.

  23. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front engine mount upper bracket
     
    Shift cable bracket, rear engine mount upper mounting bolt and rear engine mount
     
    Rear engine mount upper bracket
     
    Clutch cover

  25. Place a transmission jack under the transaxle, then remove the lower transaxle mounting bolts.
  26.  
  27. Pull the transaxle away from the engine until the mainshaft clears the clutch pressure plate, then carefully lower the transaxle using the jack.
  28.  
  29. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission lower front mount and lower rear mount
     
    Release fork boot from the clutch housing
     
    Release fork from the clutch housing by squeezing the release fork set spring with pliers
     
    Release bearing

To install:

  1. Make sure the 2 dowel pins are installed in the clutch housing.
  2.  
  3. Apply super high temp urea grease (P/N 087989002) to the release fork and release bearing, then install the release fork, release bearing and boot.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the mount bracket collars are installed in the transaxle, then install the transmission lower front and rear mounts. Tighten the front mount bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) and the lower rear mount bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Place the transaxle on the transaxle jack and raise it to engine level.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission mounting lower bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Clutch cover and tighten the retainers to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Rear engine mount upper bracket and tighten NEW bolts to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Rear engine mount
     
    New rear engine mount upper mounting bolt and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Shift cable bracket and tighten the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Front engine mount upper bracket and tighten NEW bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     

  10.  
  11. Support the subframe with the subframe adapter tool and a jack.
  12.  
  13. Install the front suspension subframe and subframe stays.
  14.  
  15. Align the matchmarks with the edge of both rear stiffeners and tighten the rear subframe mounting bolts, then the front bolts, as shown in the accompanying figure.

  17. Install or connect the following:

    New middle subframe mounting bolts. Torque the side (short) bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) and the bottom (long) bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Transaxle lower mount mounting nuts and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    New rear engine mount lower mounting bolts and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Power steering line to the subframe with the 2 clamps and bolt. Torque the bolt to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm).
     
    Power steering line bracket mounting bolt and tighten to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm)
     
    Heat shield. Tighten the retainers to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm).
     
    Intermediate shaft
     
    Driveshaft inboard joint
     
    Knuckle onto the lower arm
     
    Damper fork
     
    Front stabilizer
     
    Exhaust pipe A with new gaskets. Torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
     
    Splash shield

  19. Make sure the mount bracket collars are installed in the transaxle, then install the transaxle mount bracket and ground cable. Torque the mount bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the ground cable bolt to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm).

  21. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission upper mounting bolts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    New steering gearbox mounting bolts. Tighten the right side bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm) and the left side bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
     
    Engine rear mount stop and tighten the nuts to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm)
     
    New engine mount front mounting bolt and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Engine front mount stop and tighten the nuts to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)
     
    Bracket and secondary HO2S sensor connector
     
    Reverse lockout solenoid, back-up light switch and countershaft speed sensor connectors
     
    Cable bracket and cables. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Apply a light coat of super high temp grease to the cable ends, then install new cotter pins.

  23. Apply super high temp urea grease to the end of the cylinder rod, then install the slave cylinder. Tighten the slave cylinder mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the fluid line bolt to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm). Do not bend the clutch line.

  25. Fill the transaxle with fluid.

  27. Connect the positive and negative battery cables.

  29. Program the station presets, if necessary.
