  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative then the positive battery cables
     
    Steering wheel lower access panel
     
    Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) electrical connector
     
    Steering wheel side panels
     
    Air bag
     
    Horn electrical connector
     
    Cruise control electrical connector
     
    Audio remote switch and navigation guide switch, if equipped
     
    Steering wheel
     
    Steering joint bolts then move the joint toward the column
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rods from the steering knuckles
     
    Splash guard
     
    Feed line from the valve body
     
    Line mounting clamps
     
    Feed line from the line mounting cushions
     
    Sensor inlet line and both return lines from the hoses
     
    Steering gear mounting brackets
     
    Steering gear from the vehicle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Line mounting clamps bolts: 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)
     
    Feed line bolts: 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Mounting bracket bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Splash shield short bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Splash shield long bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
     
    Steering joint pinch bolt: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Steering wheel nut: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Air bag bolts: 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)

2001-04 RL Models

  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Line mounting clamps bolts: 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)
     
    Feed line bolts: 96 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    Mounting bracket bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Splash shield short bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Splash shield long bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
     
    Steering joint pinch bolt: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Steering wheel nut: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Air bag bolts: 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)

2004-06 TL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right side engine component cover, right rear engine component cover and left rear engine component cover.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel, then disconnect the driver's airbag 4P connector from the cable reel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two Torx bolts using a Torx T30 bit.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the horn switch connector, then remove the driver's airbag.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the cruise control set/resume switch, audio remote switch and HFL/HFL-voice control switch connectors (if equipped).
  16.  
  17. Loosen the steering wheel bolt.
  18.  
  19. Install a commercially available steering wheel puller on the steering and remove the wheel.
    CAUTION
    Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.

  20.  
  21. If you thread the puller bolts into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the steering joint cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering joint bolt, and disconnect the steering joint by moving the steering joint toward the column. Hold the slider shaft on the column with a piece of wire between the joint yoke on the slider shaft to the joint yoke on the upper shaft.
  26.  
  27. Remove the center guide and discard it.
  28.  
  29. Remove the steering joint cover. Be careful not to damage the mating surface on the joint cover and pinion shaft grommet. Replace the cover seal if necessary.
  30.  
  31. Remove and discard the cotter pin from the tie-rod ball joint nut, and loosen the nut.
  32.  
  33. Separate the tie-rod ball joint from the knuckle.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
  36.  
  37. Remove the splash shield.
  38.  
  39. Remove the engine under cover.
  40.  
  41. Attach the tool illustrated to the front suspension subframe by hanging the hook of the tool over the front of the subframe, then tighten the screw.
  42.  
  43. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach them with bolts securely.
  44.  
  45. Remove the front suspension subframe right middle mounting bolts.
  46.  
  47. Remove the front suspension subframe left middle mounting.
  48.  
  49. Loosen the front suspension subframe front bracket mounting bolts on the right and left of the vehicle so they are about 1 3 / 16 inch (30 mm) from the mounting surface.
  50.  
  51. Remove the front suspension subframe rear bracket on the right and left of the vehicle from the front suspension subframe.

  53. Lower the jack supporting the front suspension subframe with the tool illustrated slowly until the front suspension subframe has dropped about 1 15 / 16 inch (50 mm).
  54.  
  55. Remove the P/S heat baffle plate.
  56.  
  57. Remove the feed line holder mounting bolt on the front suspension subframe.
  58.  
  59. Remove the feed line holder mounting bolt and return hose from the gearbox mounting bracket.
  60.  
  61. Place several shop towels under the line connections, and cover the gearbox mounting part to protect it from the power steering fluid. Loosen the flare nut and disconnect the feed line.
  62.  
  63. Loosen the flare nut and disconnect the return line on 2004 models or the pipe on 2005-06 models.

  65. After disconnecting the lines or pipe, plug or seal them with a piece of tape or equivalent to prevent foreign materials from entering.
    NOTE
    Do not loosen the cylinder line A and B between the valve body unit and the cylinder.

  67. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts and washers on the left gearbox mount.
  68.  
  69. Remove the two flange bolts from the right side of the gearbox, then remove the gearbox mounting bracket and cushion.
  70.  
  71. Move the steering gearbox toward the front, and remove the pinion shaft grommet from the top of the valve body unit.
  72.  
  73. Apply vinyl tape to the splines on the pinion shaft.
  74.  
  75. Apply vinyl tape or equivalent material to brake lines to protect if from the pinion shaft.
  76.  
  77. Move the steering gearbox to the driver's side, and rotate it so the pinion shaft points toward the front of the vehicle.
  78.  
  79. Carefully move the steering gearbox as an assembly toward the left side of the vehicle until the pinion shaft clears the wheel well opening. Be careful not to damage the brake lines with the pinion shaft.
  80.  

To install:

  1. Before installing the steering gearbox, make sure that no power steering fluid is on the mating surface of the gearbox and front suspension subframe. To prevent the gearbox mounting bolts from loosening after the installation, remove any power steering fluid from the mount cushions and bolt holes.
  2.  
  3. Apply a mild soap and water solution to both sides of the mount cushion mating surfaces.
  4.  
  5. Pass the cylinder of the steering gearbox through the wheel well opening on the driver's side.
  6.  
  7. Carefully move the steering gearbox toward the passenger's side until the pinion shaft clears the wheel well opening on the body.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the steering gearbox so the pinion shaft points upward.
  10.  
  11. Continue moving the gearbox toward the passenger's side until the steering gearbox is in position.
  12.  
  13. Make sure the power steering return line and feed line are routed above the gearbox
  14.  
  15. Remove the vinyl tape from the pinion shaft, and install the pinion shaft grommet. Align the slot in the pinion shaft grommet with the lug portion on the valve housing.

  17. Position the cutout on the mounting cushion as shown, and install it on the cylinder of the gearbox securely.
  18.  
  19. Install the new gearbox mounting bracket over the mounting cushion, and loosely install the two flange bolts.
  20.  
  21. Install the new gearbox mounting bolts and washers on the left side of the gearbox, then tighten them to the 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).

  23. Tighten the flange bolts on the right side of the gearbox to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) alternately in two or more steps.

  25. Loosely connect the return line/pipe and feed line by hand.
  26.  
  27. Install the feed line holder and return hose on the gearbox mounting bracket.
  28.  
  29. Install the feed line holder on the front suspension subframe. Make sure that there is no interference between the feed and return lines and any other parts.
  30.  
  31. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
  32.  

2005-06 RL Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right and left front fender trim.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the relay box and release the wire harness clips.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front strut brace.
  10.  
  11. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel, then disconnect the driver's airbag 4P connector from the cable reel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two Torx bolts using a Torx T30 bit.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the horn switch connector, then remove the driver's airbag.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the cable reel connector.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the steering wheel nut.
  20.  
  21. Install a steering wheel puller on the steering wheel. Free the steering wheel from the steering column shaft by turning the pressure bolt of the puller.
    NOTE
    These items when removing the steering wheel:



    Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.
     
    If you thread the puller bolts into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt.

  23. Remove the steering wheel puller, then remove the steering wheel nut and steering wheel from the steering column
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering joint cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering joint bolts, then disconnect the steering joint from the pinion shaft and the steering column shaft.
  28.  
  29. Remove the center guide.
  30.  
  31. Remove steering joint cover. Be careful not to damage the mating surface on joint cover and the pinion shaft grommet. Replace the cover seal if necessary.
  32.  
  33. Remove the pinion shaft grommet from the top of the valve body unit.
  34.  
  35. Apply vinyl tape to the splines on the pinion shaft.
  36.  
  37. Remove and discard the cotter pin from the tie-rod ball joint nut and loosen the nut.
  38.  
  39. Separate the tie-rod ball joint and knuckle using the ball joint remover
  40.  
  41. Remove the nuts from the rear engine mount.
  42.  
  43. Remove the rear engine mount and the engine mount pressure hose holder mounting bolt on the gearbox stiffener.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the engine mount pressure hose from the rear engine mount.
  46.  
  47. Remove the feed line holder mounting bolt and A/T wire line holder mounting bolt on the gearbox stiffener.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect the return hose from the clamp.
  50.  
  51. Remove the feed line holder mounting bolt and return line holder mounting bolt on the gearbox.
  52.  
  53. Disconnect the stepping valve motor connector.
  54.  
  55. Place shop towels under the line connections, and cover the gearbox mounting part to protect it from the power steering fluid. Loosen the adjustable hose clamp and disconnect the return hose.
  56.  
  57. Loosen the 14 mm flare nut and disconnect the feed line.
  58.  
  59. Remove the return line joint from the steering gearbox.
  60.  
  61. Remove the P/S heat baffle plate.
  62.  
  63. Remove the gearbox stiffener.
  64.  
  65. Remove the dynamic damper between the gearbox stiffener and front suspension subframe.
  66.  
  67. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts and washers on the right, then left gearbox mount.
  68.  
  69. Remove the 4-way brake line joint bolts.
  70.  
  71. Move the steering gearbox to the passenger's side, and rotate it so the pinion shaft points toward the front of the vehicle.
  72.  
  73. Carefully move the steering gearbox as an assembly toward the left side of the vehicle until the pinion shaft clears the wheel well opening. Be careful not to damage the brake lines with the pinion shaft.
  74.  
  75. Lift the passenger's side, and remove the steering gearbox through the wheel well opening on the driver's side.
  76.  
  77. After removing the steering gearbox, make sure that no power steering fluid gets on the gearbox mount cushions, gearbox housing, surface of the front suspension subframe, and stiffener. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once.
  78.  

To install:

  1. Apply a mild soap and water solution to both sides of the mount cushion mating surfaces (A).
  2.  
  3. Lift and pass the passenger's side of the steering gearbox through the wheel well opening on the driver's side.
  4.  
  5. Carefully move the steering gearbox toward the passenger's side until the pinion shaft clears the wheel well opening on the body.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the steering gearbox so the pinion shaft points upward, then move the steering gearbox to the driver's side.
  8.  
  9. Install the 4-way brake line joint.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering gearbox mounting bolts and washers on the mounts, then tighten them to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the gearbox stiffener, then tighten the mounting bolts to the torque shown in the illustration.

  15. Install a dynamic damper in the reverse order of removal.
  16.  
  17. Install the remaining components keeping in mind the following:
    1. Tighten the rear engine mount bolt to the specifications shown in the illustration.

    3. Install the nuts on the rear engine mount, then tighten them to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the tie-rod end ball joint nut, and tighten it 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm). Install the new cotter pin. Install the pinion shaft grommet. Align the slot in the pinion shaft grommet with the lug portion on the valve housing.
    6.  
    7. Align the bolt hole on the steering joint with the groove around the pinion shaft, and loosely install the joint bolts. Be sure that the joint bolt is securely in the groove in the pinion shaft. Pull on the steering joint to make sure that the steering joint is fully seated. Tighten the steering joint bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

    9. Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are aligned straight ahead, then center the cable reel (A). Do this by first rotating the cable reel clockwise until it stops. Then rotate it counterclockwise about three full turns. The arrow mark (B) on the cable reel label point should point straight up. Refer to the illustration for locations.

    11. Position the two tabs of the turn signal canceling sleeve. Route the airbag connector through the steering wheel and install the steering wheel on to the steering column shaft, making sure the steering wheel hub engages the pins of the cable reel and tabs of the turn signal canceling sleeve. Do not tap on the steering wheel or steering column shaft when installing the steering wheel.
    12.  
    13. Install the steering wheel nut and tighten it to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Connect the cable reel connector.
    14.  
    15. Make sure the wire harness is routed and fastened properly.
    16.  
    17. Fill the system with power steering fluid, and bleed air from the system.
    18.  
    19. Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times to warm up to the fluid. Check the gearbox for leaks.

    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the hose and pipe, plug or cap the hose and pipe to prevent foreign materials from entering the valve body unit.


    NOTE
    Do not loosen the cylinder pipes between the valve body unit and the cylinder.

    Left tie rod end, then slide the steering gear all of the way to the right

  9. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Pull the steering gear all the way down to clear the pinion shaft from the bulkhead, and remove the pinion shaft grommet.
  12.  
  13. Slide the rack all of the way to the right, then place the left rack end below the rear beam.
  14.  
  15. Move the steering gear assembly to the left, and tilt the left side down to remove it from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:
    NOTE
    After installing the steering gear, check the air hose connections for interference with adjacent parts.



    Left steering gear mounting bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Right steering gear mounting bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     



    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Rear beam brace rod bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Catalytic converter nuts: 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end nuts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Steering wheel nut: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)
     
    Air bag bolts: 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)

Integra & RSX Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the hose and pipe, plug or cap the hose and pipe to prevent foreign materials from entering the valve body unit.


    NOTE
    Do not loosen the cylinder pipes between the valve body unit and the cylinder.

  9. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Pull the steering gear all the way down to clear the pinion shaft from the bulkhead, and remove the pinion shaft grommet.
  12.  
  13. Slide the rack all of the way to the right, then place the left rack end below the rear beam.
  14.  
  15. Move the steering gear assembly to the left, and tilt the left side down to remove it from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:
    NOTE
    After installing the steering gear, check the air hose connections for interference with adjacent parts.



    Left steering gear mounting bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Right steering gear mounting bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     



    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

  13. Place some rags under the fluid line connections and cover the gearbox mounting part to protect it from power steering fluid. Loosen the flare nut and disconnect the fluid and return lines.

CAUTION
After disconnecting the fluid and return lines, plug or cap the hose and pipe to prevent foreign materials from entering the valve body unit.


NOTE
Do not loosen the cylinder pipes between the valve body unit and the cylinder.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following: Front suspension subframe left mid mountSteering gear mounting bolts from the left gearbox mount, then remove the steering stiffener plate2 flange bolts from the right side of the gearbox, then remove the gearbox mounting bracket, and cushion

    Front suspension subframe left mid mount
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts from the left gearbox mount, then remove the steering stiffener plate
     
    2 flange bolts from the right side of the gearbox, then remove the gearbox mounting bracket, and cushion

  3. Move the steering gear toward the front, and remove the pinion shaft grommet from the top of the valve body unit.
  4.  
  5. Put vinyl tape on the brake lines to protect them from the pinion shaft.
  6.  
  7. Move the steering gear to the driver-s side and rotate it so the pinion shaft points toward the front of the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Carefully move the steering gearbox toward the driver-s side of the vehicle until the pinion shaft clears the wheelwell opening. Do not damage the brake lines with the pinion shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering gear from the driver-s side wheelwell opening.
  12.  


NOTE
Make sure no power steering fluid gets on the gearbox mount cushions, gearbox housing, surfaces of the subframe or stiffener. Wipe up any spilled fluid immediately.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values: Left steering gear mounting bracket flange bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)Right steering gear mounting bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)

    Left steering gear mounting bracket flange bolts: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)

  17. Move the steering gear toward the front, and remove the pinion shaft grommet from the top of the valve body unit.

  19. Put vinyl tape on the brake lines to protect them from the pinion shaft.

  21. Move the steering gear to the driver-s side and rotate it so the pinion shaft points toward the front of the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Carefully move the steering gearbox toward the driver-s side of the vehicle until the pinion shaft clears the wheel well opening. Do not damage the brake lines with the pinion shaft.

  25. Remove the steering gear from the driver-s side wheel well opening.
    NOTE
