Removal & Installation



2001-03 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear seat:
    1. Remove the lower cushion bolts located under the armrest and near the floor.
    2.  
    3. Pull the rear of the lower cushion up and lift it forward to release it from the clips.
    4.  
    5. Pull down the trunk bulkhead trim and release the armrest lid clips.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolts from the top and bottom of the back cushion, then lift it up and forward to disengage the securing hooks.
    8.

  7. Place a floor jack under the lower arm and slightly compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper mounting nuts and the lower flange bolt.
  10.  
  11. Lower the jack to remove the strut. Be sure and mark the right and left struts so they can be reinstalled on the proper sides.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the strut into the vehicle. Loosely install the mounting nuts and mounting bolt, but do not tighten them until the weight of the vehicle is on the suspension.
  2.  
  3. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack until the weight of the vehicle is on the strut. Tighten the upper mounting nuts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm), then tighten the lower mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Be careful not to pinch the ABS speed sensor wire between the strut and bracket.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear seat back and torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the armrest lid.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower seat cushion and torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm).

2001-04 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper strut mount cover from the rear panel, just below the speaker-On sedans, remove the trunk side panel.
     
    Trim cover, then remove the upper mount nuts
     
    Wheel sensor wire brackets, on cars with ABS-do not disconnect the wheel sensor connector
     
    Lower strut mounting bolt
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the rear suspension and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. If necessary, use a spring compressor to remove the spring from the strut assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Reassemble the strut and coil spring assembly. Tighten the strut self-locking nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lower the rear suspension and position the strut assembly in the vehicle. The nut welded to the lower strut mounting should face the front of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the upper mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. Install the strut lower mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Raise the vehicle until the vehicle just lifts off the safety stand and tighten the lower strut bolt and lower control arm bolt. Tighten the lower strut mounting bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel sensor wire bracket on cars with ABS.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the upper mounting nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheels, then lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Install the trim panel, or the trunk side panel.
  18.  
  19. Check the vehicle's alignment.
  20.  

2004-06 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear shelf.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two flange nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flange nut while holding the joint pin with a hex wrench, then disconnect the stabilizer link from the stabilizer link bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flange bolt from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Lower the rear suspension, then remove the damper from the vehicle. Damper springs are different, left and right. Mark the springs L and R before you continue
  14.  

To install:

  1. Lower the rear suspension, and position the damper (A) in the body.
  2.  
  3. Loosely install the flange nuts onto the top of the damper.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the flange bolt (A) on the bottom of the damper. Connect the stabilizer link (B) on the bracket (C), then loosely install the flange nut (D).

  7. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack to load the vehicle weight, and tighten the flange bolt to the torque specified in the accompanying illustration.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the flange nut while holding the joint pin with a hex wrench.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the two flange nuts on top of the damper to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear shelf.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheel.
  16.  
  17. Check the rear wheel alignment, and adjust if necessary.
  18.  

2005-06 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Place a floor jack at the connecting point of lower arm and the stabilizer link to support them.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the headlight leveling sensor linkage from the damper.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear shelf.
  10.  
  11. Remove the two flange nuts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the damper lower mounting bolt from the knuckle
  14.  
  15. Lower the rear suspension, then remove the damper from the vehicle
  16.  

To install:

  1. Place a floor jack at the connecting point of lower arm and the stabilizer link.
  2.  
  3. Compress the damper by hand, and move it into position.
  4.  
  5. Loosely tighten the damper lower mounting bolt.
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the flange nuts.
  8.  
  9. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack to load it with the vehicle's weight.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the flange nuts and the damper lower mounting bolt to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the damper lower mounting bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the headlight leveling sensor linkage to the damper.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheel.
  18.  
  19. Check the rear wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
  20.  

CL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear shelf.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two flange nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flange nut while holding the joint pin with a hex wrench, then disconnect the stabilizer link from the stabilizer link bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flange bolt from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Lower the rear suspension, then remove the damper from the vehicle. Damper springs are different, left and right. Mark the springs L and R before you continue
  14.  

To install:

  1. Lower the rear suspension, and position the damper (A) in the body.
  2.  
  3. Loosely install the flange nuts onto the top of the damper.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the flange bolt on the bottom of the damper. Connect the stabilizer link on the bracket then loosely install the flange nut.
  6.  
  7. Raise the rear suspension with a floor jack to load the vehicle weight, and tighten the flange bolt to the torque specified in the accompanying illustration.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the flange nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) while holding the joint pin with a hex wrench.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the two flange nuts on top of the damper to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear shelf.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheel.
  16.  
  17. Check the rear wheel alignment, and adjust if necessary.
  18.  

Integra & RSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Support the control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Strut access panel
     
    Upper mounting nuts
     
    Wheel sensor wire brackets (if equipped)
     
    Lower mounting bolt
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the jack and remove the strut from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut and hand tighten the upper mounting nuts
     
    Wheel sensor wire bracket and torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the control arm and install the lower mounting bolt and torque it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Torque the upper mounting nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the strut access panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheels.
  10.  

NSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Lower rear hatch glass trim
     
    Upper strut mounting nuts
     
    Rear strut brace (NSX-T model only)
     
    Lower strut mounting nut
     
    Stabilizer link
     
    Strut from the vehicle
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut
     
    Stabilizer link and torque the nut (at the stabilizer bar) to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm)
     
    Lower strut mounting bolt and torque it to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm)
     
    New upper strut mounting nuts and torque them to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
     
    Strut brace (if equipped) and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Rear hatch glass trim
     
    Rear wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  4.  

TSX Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Fold the rear seat forward.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear shelf cover
     
    Seat side bolster cushions. The side bolster cushions are secured by 1 screw at the bottom, and 2 clips at the top.
     
    Strut mount cap, if equipped, and upper strut mounting nuts
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    NOTE
    The left and right struts are different, so be sure to mark them L & R if you are removing both struts before continuing.



    Rear wheels, then support the knuckle with a floor jack
     
    Strut lower flange bolt from the knuckle
     
    Strut flange nut while holding the joint pin with a hex wrench
     
    Stabilizer link from the bracket
     
    Strut, while lowering rear suspension

NOTE
Use new self-locking nuts when installing the strut.

  1. Lower the rear suspension.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Strut into the upper mount. Only hand-tighten the upper mounting nuts.
     
    Strut into position on the knuckle, then loosely install the flange bolt on the bottom of the strut
     
    Stabilizer link on the bracket and loosely install the flange nut
     

  4.  
  5. Place a jack under the lower strut mount. Raise the jack until the weight of the vehicle is on the jack.
  6.  
  7. With the suspension under load, tighten the lower mount bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  8.  
  9. While holding the joint pin with a cotter pin, tighten the flange nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the upper nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Rear wheel(s). Lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
     
    Rear seat side bolsters and fold the seat back into place.
     
    Rear bulkhead cover
     

  14.  
  15. Check and adjust the vehicle's rear wheel alignment.
  16.  

3.2tl
3.5rl
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: Upper strut mount cover from the rear panel, just below the speaker-On sedans, remove the trunk side panel.Trim cover, then remove the upper mount nutsWheel sensor wire brackets, on cars with ABS-do not disconnect the wheel sensor connectorLower strut mounting bolt

  6.  
  7. On the Integra, remove the flange bolt that connects the lower arm to the trailing arm.
  8.  
  9. Lower the rear suspension and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. If necessary, use a spring compressor to remove the spring from the strut assembly.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Reassemble the strut and coil spring assembly. Tighten the strut self-locking nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lower the rear suspension and position the strut assembly in the vehicle. The nut welded to the lower strut mounting should face the front of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the upper mounting nuts.
  6.  
  7. On the Integra, raise the rear suspension and install the bolt connecting the lower arm to the trailing arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the strut lower mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle until the vehicle just lifts off the safety stand and tighten the lower strut bolt and lower control arm bolt. On the integra, tighten the lower strut bolt and the control arm bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). In the 3.5RL, tighten the lower strut mounting bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel sensor wire bracket on cars with ABS.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the upper mounting nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels, then lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Install the trim panel, or the trunk side panel.
  20.  
  21. Check the vehicle's alignment.
  22.  

Integra And RSX
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Support the control arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following: Rear wheelsStrut access panelUpper mounting nutsWheel sensor wire brackets (if equipped)Lower mounting bolt

    Rear wheels

    Upper mounting nuts

  8.  
  9. Lower the jack and remove the strut from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Strut and hand tighten the upper mounting nutsWheel sensor wire bracket and torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)

    Strut and hand tighten the upper mounting nuts
     
    Wheel sensor wire bracket and torque the bolts to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the control arm and install the lower mounting bolt and torque it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Torque the upper mounting nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the strut access panel.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheels.
  10.  

NSX
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.

To install:

  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: Rear shelf coverSeat side bolster cushions. The side bolster cushions are secured by 1 screw at the bottom, and 2 clips at the top.Strut mount cap, if equipped, and upper strut mounting nuts

  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Rear wheels, then support the knuckle with a floor jackStrut lower flange bolt from the knuckleStrut flange nut while holding the joint pin with a hex wrenchStabilizer link from the bracketStrut, while lowering rear suspension

NOTE
The left and right struts are different, so be sure to mark them L & R if you are removing both struts before continuing.

NOTE
Use new self-locking nuts when installing the strut.

  5. Place a jack under the lower strut mount. Raise the jack until the weight of the vehicle is on the jack.
  6.  
  7. With the suspension under load, tighten the lower mount bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  8.  
  9. While holding the joint pin with a cotter pin, tighten the flange nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the upper nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.

  14.  
  15. Check and adjust the vehicle's rear wheel alignment.
