Control Arm Bushing Replacement




NOTE
The bushings are an integral part of the control arm and are not replaceable. If they are damaged the control arm should be replaced.

Removal & Installation



2001-03 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Lower damper fork bolt
     
    Stabilizer bar from the arm
     
    Lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Radius rod from the lower control arm
     
    Lower control arm mounting bolts
     
    Lower arm from the vehicle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm and torque the bolts to 40 ft lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Lower damper fork bolt and torque it to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Radius rod and torque the bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Measure and adjust the wheel alignment.
  4.  

2004-06 TL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm mounting nut) and washer from the knuckle side.
  6.  
  7. Mark the cam positions of the adjusting bolt and adjusting cam, then remove the self-locking nut, adjusting cam, and adjusting bolt. Discard the self-locking nut and control arm mounting nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the control arm.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, keep in mind the following:
    1. Align the cam positions of the adjusting bolt and adjusting cam with the marked positions when tightening.
    2.  
    3. Use a new self-locking nut and control arm mounting nut on reassembly.
    4.  
    5. Tighten all mounting hardware to the torque specified in the accompanying illustration.
    6.  
    7. First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the final torque specs.
    8.  
    9. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust if necessary.

2005-06 RL Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm mounting nut) and washer from the knuckle side.
  6.  
  7. Place a floor jack under the trailing arm, and support the suspension.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel sensor harness bracket from the upper arm.
    NOTE
    Use a new bracket on reassembly.

  11. Remove the lock pin from the upper arm ball joint, and loosen the nut.
    NOTE
    During installation, insert the new lock pin as shown after tightening the nut.

  13. Disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using the ball joint remover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the flange bolts and nuts and remove the upper arm.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper arm in the reverse order of removal, and please note the following:
    1. First install all the suspension components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening the bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
    2.  
    3. Tighten all the mounting hardware to the specified torque.
    4.  
    5. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the knuckle.
    6.  
    7. Before connecting the ball joint to the knuckle, degrease the threaded section and tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the connecting hole, and the threaded section and mating surface of the castle nut.
    8.  
    9. Torque the castle nut to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
    10.  
    11. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary.
