CAUTION
The fuel injection system remains under pressure after the engine has been turned OFF . Properly relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire or personal injury.


NOTE
The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code number before disconnecting the battery. If the vehicle is equipped with 4WS, the steering control unit is shut down when the battery is disconnected. After connecting the battery, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the steering control unit.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the kick panel, then remove the PGM-FI main relay (FUEL PUMP) from the under-dash fuse/relay box. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  8.  
  9. On vehicles without quick connect fittings:
    1. Use a box wrench on the 6mm service bolt or fuel pulsation damper, as applicable, on the fuel rail while holding the special banjo bolt with another wrench.

    3. Place a rag or shop towel over the bolt/pulsation damper.
    4.  
    5. Slowly loosen the bolt/damper 1 complete turn.
    6.  
    7. On vehicles with quick-connect fittings:

    9. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover.
    10.  
    11. Clean any dirt from the quick-connect fitting.
    12.  
    13. Place a rag or shop towel over quick-connect fitting.
    14.  
    15. Detach the quick-connect fitting by holding the connector with one hand, then squeeze the retainer tabs with the other hand to release them from the locking pawls. Pull the connector off.
      CAUTION
      Do not allow fuel spray or fuel vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher nearby. Never store fuel in an open container due to risk of fire or explosion.


      NOTE
      A fuel pressure gauge may be attached at the 6mm service bolt/pulsation damper or quick-connect location. Always replace the washer between the service bolt and the banjo bolt whenever the service bolt is loosened.

  11. If equipped, remove the service bolt/damper and install a new washer. Tighten the 6mm service bolt to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm). If equipped with a fuel pulsation damper, tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Don't overtighten the service bolts, their threads may strip and cause leaks.

  13. If equipped with a quick-connect fitting, connect the fitting, making sure the locking pawls are properly engaged,

  15. Clean up any fuel spilled on the engine and intake manifold.
  16.  
  17. Install the fuel pump relay to the under dash fuel/relay box and install the kick-panel cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the fuel filler cap.
  20.  
  21. Properly dispose of the fuel soaked rag or shop towel.
  22.  
  23. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Turn the ignition ON , but don't start the engine. Repeat this 2 or 3 times to pressurize the fuel system. Check for fuel leaks.

  27. Enter the radio security code.
