  7. Drain the transaxle.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
  10.
  11. Disconnect and plug the transaxle cooler hoses; wire them up next to the radiator so the automatic transaxle fluid won't drain out.

Fig. Fig. 55: Shifter components-Vigor

  1. Make sure the transmission is in P Disconnect both battery cables and remove the battery and tray.
  2.
  3. Without disconnecting the wires, remove the ABS relay box and set it aside.
  4.
  5. Remove the distributor.
  6.
  7. Remove the emission control equipment box from the firewall without disconnecting the vacuum hoses.
  8.
  9. Remove the small torque converter cover and rotate the crankshaft as required to remove the 8 torque converter-to-drive plate bolts.
  10.
  11. Disconnect the transmission wiring and the dip stick pipe.
  12.
  13. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
  14.
  15. Remove the guard plate and remove the plug to drain the transmission fluid.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the oil cooler hoses.
  18.
  19. The differential stays on the vehicle. Remove the secondary cover and the 36mm sealing bolt and install the extension shaft removal tool. Disconnect the differential extension shaft from the transmission.
  20.
  21. Remove the front exhaust pipe and the brackets as required.
  22.
  23. Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission and remove the bracket and cable.
  24.
  25. Place a transmission jack securely under the transmission and take the weight off the mounts.
  26.
  27. Remove the mounts and the remaining transmission-to-engine bolts to slide the transmission back away from the engine. Do not remove the flywheel cover from the engine.
  28.

To install:
  1. Install the dowel pins and set the extension shaft in place. Use a new set ring on the shaft, lightly lubricate the splines with molybdenum grease and pack the opening in the drive pinion with grease.
  2.
  3. Install the transmission and start all of the bolts. Don't forget the transmission-to-differential shim. Torque the 12mm bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the mounts and brackets. Torque the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  6.
  7. With the transmission in P , install the extension shaft using the special tool. Make sure the shaft snaps into place on the set ring.
  8.
  9. Pack the shaft area with molybdenum grease, but keep the thread area clean. Apply liquid gasket to the sealing bolt threads and torque the bolt to 58 ft. lbs. (80 Nm). Install the cover.
  10.
  11. Install the rear mount and torque the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts and torque them in 2 steps in a criss-cross pattern to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Install the torque converter cover.
  14.
  15. Connect the shift cable and wiring and make sure the selector lever moves easily.
  16.
  17. Connect the oil cooler hoses.
  18.
  19. Use new gaskets and install the exhaust pipe.
  20.
  21. Install the dip stick pipe.
  22.
  23. Install the emission control equipment box, the distributor and the ABS relay box.
  24.
  25. Connect all the wiring and the battery cables and refill the transmission oil.
  26.
  27. When all parts have been installed, start the engine and shift through all the gears 3 times to fill all the passages with fluid and check the shift cable adjustment. When the engine is fully warmed up, stop the engine and check the fluid level.
  28.
  29. Check the ignition timing.
