Timing Belt Front Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1986-89 Integra
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the upper timing belt cover.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the crankshaft to the white timing mark on the pulley, indicating the No. 1 piston is at TDC. The camshaft sprockets UP mark should be facing upward with the alignment marks aligned with the top of the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the alternator and remove the drive belt(s).
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower timing belt cover bolts and the cover.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Reverse the removal procedures. Make sure the timing belt and the front oil seal are properly installed on the crankshaft before replacing the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower cover but don't fully tighten the bolts yet. Install the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper cover and tighten the bolts for both covers.
  6.  
  7. Install the alternator belt and tension it properly.
  8.  

1991-93 Integra
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the upper timing belt cover.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the crankshaft to the white timing mark on the pulley, indicating the No. 1 piston is at TDC. The camshaft sprockets UP mark should be facing upward with the alignment marks aligned with the top of the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the left front wheel and splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering belt and power steering pump. Do not disconnect the power steering fluid lines.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air conditioning belt and the alternator belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine support bolts and nut, then remove the side mount rubber.
  12.  
  13. Remove the valve cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the middle timing cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the special crankshaft pulley bolt and the crankshaft pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower timing belt cover.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the lower cover and crankshaft pulley. Carefully oil the threads of the pulley bolt without getting oil on the washer.
  2.  
  3. Torque the bolt in 3 steps: to 145 ft. lbs. (200 Nm), then loosen it again, then re-torque to 130 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  4.  
  5. The remaining installation is the reverse order of removal.
  6.  

1986-90 Legend
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Rotate the crankshaft to align the crankshaft pulley or flywheel pointer, at Top Dead Center (TDC); the camshaft sprocket notches should align with the marks on the rear timing belt cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pulley cover and harness cover from above the timing belt upper cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine sub harness clip.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine support bolts, loosen the side mount rubber, and raise the side mount bracket. When supporting the engine, do not jack on the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower splash guard from under the front of the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the air conditioning idler pulley adjusting bolt and remove the air conditioning compressor belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the alternator adjusting bolt, mounting bolt and remove the alternator with the belt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the power steering pump adjusting bolt, mounting bolt and remove the power steering pump with the belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front and rear upper covers.
  18.  
  19. Remove the special crankshaft pulley bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower timing belt cover.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the timing belt and oil seal are properly installed before replacing the lower cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower belt cover but don't tighten the bolts yet.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (170 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the remaining timing belt covers and tighten all bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the power steering pump and alternator and properly tension the belts.
  10.  
  11. Install and tension the air conditioner belt.
  12.  
  13. Set the engine in place and install the engine side mount bracket bolts.
  14.  
  15. Secure the wiring in place and install the lower splash shield.
  16.  

1991-93 Legend
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine wire harness covers at the front of the engine.
  4.  
  5. Label and disconnect the wiring harness.
  6.  
  7. Remove the breather pipe and vacuum pipe bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator, air conditioning and power steering belts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt upper covers and turn the crankshaft pulley to the TDC No.1 cylinder mark.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the air conditioner belt tensioner pulley.
  16.  
  17. Remove the dip stick tube and the lower timing belt cover.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Make sure the rubber seals and cover are clean and dry and install the lower cover.
  2.  
  3. Carefully oil the threads of the pulley bolt without getting oil on the washer. Install the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to 174 ft. lbs. (240 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Use a new O-ring to install the dip stick tube.
  6.  
  7. Install and adjust the drive belts for the air conditioner, power steering and alternator.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper timing belt covers, breather pipe and the wiring harness.
  10.  

Vigor

The radio is equipped with a theft protection program. Be sure the 5 digit security code is available before disconnecting the battery.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Label and disconnect the engine wiring as required.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the adjusting bolts and remove the accessory drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt upper cover.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the crankshaft to align the white timing mark on the crankshaft pulley with the pointer on the lower cover. Make sure the UP mark and the TDC marks on the camshaft sprocket are correctly positioned.
  12.  
  13. Remove the center bolt from the crankshaft and remove the crankshaft pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower timing belt cover.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the lower cover but do not fully tighten the bolts yet.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley and without getting oil on the washer, oil the threads on the bolt. Torque the bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the upper cover and tighten the bolts for both covers.
  6.  
  7. Install the cylinder head cover with new gaskets and O-rings as required.
  8.  
  9. Install and adjust the accessory drive belts.
  10.  
  11. After connecting the battery, enter the radio security code.
  12.
