Automatic Retracting Belts

The seat belts used in Acura vehicles may be tested for function without removal. The spools rely on an internal pendulum mechanism to lock under sudden deceleration or impact. The old test of pulling sharply on the belt will not cause it to lock; it must be tested with the vehicle in motion.

Fasten the seat belt while in your normal driving position. The belt should be snug against your chest and lap. In a safe location, drive the vehicle at about 10 mph. Apply the brakes very hard; the belt should lock and restrain you in the seat.

To test lap belts, simply connect the buckle (as it would be in use) and apply firm force to either side of the belt. There should be no slippage of the belt through the adjuster.

CAUTION
Vehicles with seat belt pretensioners as part of the SRS system require the pretensioners to be disarmed. There is a red shorting plug that is inserted into the tensioner assembly once the electrical harness is disconnected. The system can activate if not disarmed and cause damage or injury.

Seat belts are a safety item; the continued effectiveness of the seat belt system depends on the proper removal and installation of the belt assemblies. Use only wrenches of the correct size. Observe torque specifications carefully. Never substitute bolts when reinstalling; seat belt retaining bolts are of specific sizes and materials. Make certain every washer, shim, etc., is reinstalled exactly as it was.

Seat belt removal is simple once you get to the bolts. Removal of seats, interior panels and possibly the carpet will be required depending on the belt. Removing interior panels can turn into a major project, since panels adjoin and overlap. Be very careful during panel removal not to damage the clips and hardware holding the panel. Never force or pry a panel that won't come loose. Instead, look for the hidden clip or screw. If necessary, diagram the placement of clips and retainers. When reassembling, take the time to fit every retainer and align the panel correctly. The one you skip will cause a squeak on every bump.
