  1. Disconnect and plug the hoses from the reservoir.
  2.
  3. Remove the 10mm flange bolts, the belt from the pulley and the pump assembly.
  4.

To install:
  1. Reverse the removal procedures. Torque the power steering pump-to-engine bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm). Be sure to observe the following:
    1. Connect the hoses tightly.
    2.
    3. Adjust the belt tension.
    4.
    5. Check the fluid level and add, if necessary.
    6.
    7. Bleed the air from the system.
    8.

  1. Drain the power steering fluid. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the power steering pump and plug them.
  2.
  3. Remove the belt by loosening the adjusting bolts on the pump bracket.
  4.
  5. Remove the power steering mounting bolts and remove the power steering pump.
  6.

To install:
  1. Reverse the removal procedures. Torque the power steering pump-to-engine bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Be sure to observe the following:
    1. Connect the hoses tightly.
    2.
    3. Adjust the belt tension.
    4.
    5. Check the fluid level and add, if necessary.
    6.
    7. Bleed the air from the system.
    8.

  2.

When installing a new or rebuilt pump, check the power steering pump preload in a vise before installing it on the vehicle. Check the pump preload with a torque wrench: it should take about 3 ft. lbs. (4 Nm) to turn the pump.

1986-90 Legend

  1. Remove the belt cover.
  2.
  3. Drain the fluid from the system.
  4.
  5. Disconnect and plug the inlet/outlet hoses from the pump.
  6.
  7. Remove the belt by loosening the pump pivot bolt and adjusting nut.
  8.
  9. Remove the pump assembly nut/bolt and the assembly.
  10.

To install:
  1. Reverse the removal procedures. Torque the power steering pump-to-bracket bolt to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the power steering pump-to-bracket nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Be sure to observe the following:
    1. Refill the reservoir with new fluid to the Upper Level on the reservoir.
    2.
    3. Connect the hoses tightly.
    4.
    5. Adjust the belt tension.
    6.
    7. Bleed the air from the system.
    8.
    9. Check the fluid level and add, if necessary.

  1. Disconnect the fluid return hose from the rack and put the end in a container. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. When fluid stops coming out, stop the engine.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner cover and duct.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the hydraulic lines from the pump.
  6.
  7. Loosen the adjustment and remove the belt.
  8.
  9. Remove the special bolt and nut and remove the pump.
  10.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the special bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and the nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the hydraulic lines, install and adjust the belt and refill the reservoir. To bleed the system, run the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. Check the fluid level.
  4.

SYSTEM BLEEDING

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Refill the power steering pump reservoir to the full level.
  4.
  5. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock (several times).
  6.
  7. After the air bubbles have been eliminated from the system, refill the reservoir and lower the vehicle.
