Removal & Installation

2001-02 Models
  1. If the compressor is marginally operable, run the engine at idle speed, and let the air conditioning work for a few minutes, then shut the engine off.
  2.
  3. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio and the navigation system, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  6.
  7. Recover the refrigerant with a recovery/recycling/charging station, as outlined in this section.
  8.
  9. Remove the alternator, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  10.
  11. Remove the compressor clutch connector (A) from the condenser fan shroud (B), then disconnect the connector. Disconnect the condenser fan connector (C), then remove the wire harness clips (D) from the condenser fan shroud. Remove the cruise control actuator cable (E) from the clamp. Loosen the lower mounting bolts, then remove the upper mounting bolts and the condenser fan shroud. Be careful not to damage the radiator fins when removing the condenser fan shroud.

  16.
  17. If necessary, remove the mounting bolts and the compressor bracket.
  18.

To install:

  1. Install the compressor in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

Tighten the compressor mounting bracket bolts (if removed), to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

Tighten the compressor mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)

If you're installing a new compressor, you must calculate the amount of refrigerant oil to be removed from it.

Replace the O-rings with new ones at each fitting, and apply a thin coat of refrigerant oil before installing them. Be sure to use the right O-rings for HFC-134a (R-134a) to avoid leakage.

Use refrigerant oil (DENSO ND-OIL 8) for HFC-134a DENSO piston type compressor only.

To avoid contamination, do not return the oil to the container once dispensed, and never mix it with other refrigerant oils.

Immediately after using the oil, reinstall the cap on the container, and seal it to avoid moisture absorption.

Do not spill the refrigerant oil on the vehicle; it may damage the paint; if the refrigerant oil contacts the paint, wash it off immediately.

Be careful not to damage the radiator fins when installing the compressor and the condenser fan shroud.

Charge the system, as outlined in this section.

Enter the anti-theft code for the radio, then enter the customer's radio station presets.

  2.
  3. Charge the system, as outlined in this section.
    NOTE
The idle learn procedure must be done so the PCM can learn the engine idle characteristics. Perform the idle learn procedure whenever you do any of these actions: Replace PCM, Reset PCM, Update PCM or Replace or clean the throttle body.

  4.
  5. Perform the PCM idle learn procedure, as follows:
    NOTE
Erasing DTCs with the HDS does not require you to do the idle learn procedure.

    1. Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, rear window defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
    2.
    3. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
    4.
    5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and wait 2 seconds.
    6.
    7. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the engine coolant temperature reaches 194 ºF (90 ºC).
    8.
    9. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle fully closed.
      NOTE
If the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the 5 minutes.

    10.

  6.
  7. Perform the power window unit reset procedure. Resetting the power window control unit is required after performing the following procedures:

    Disconnecting the battery.

Removing the No. 8 (20 A) fuse from the under-hood subfuse box.

Disconnecting the 18P connector from the power window control unit.

Removing the window regulator, glass or glass run channel.

Disconnecting the driver's door wire harness.

    1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    2.
    3. Turn the ignition ON (II).
    4.
    5. Lower the driver's window all the way down by pushing the driver's switch to the second detent (AUTO DOWN) when the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver's window switch in the AUTO DOWN position for 2 seconds.
    6.
    7. Raise the driver's window all the way up without stopping by pulling the driver's switch to the second detent (AUTO UP) when the window reaches the top, hold the driver's window switch in the AUTO UP position for 2 seconds.
    8.
    9. If the window does not work in AUTO, reset the power window control unit according to the above procedure again.
    10.

  8.
  9. Enter the anti-theft codes for the radio, and the navigation system then enter the customer's radio station presets.
