Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Recover the refrigerant using approved equipment.

    Heater valve cable from the valve arm. Turn the valve arm to the fully opened position.
     
    Heater hoses from the heater unit
     
    Mounting nut from the heater unit. Be careful not to bend or damage fuel or brake lines.

  9. Remove the dashboard as follows:
    1. Remove the center console by unlatching the clips.
    2.  
    3. Remove the dashboard lower cover screw, gently pull down on the cover to disengage the clips and disconnect the electrical connections.
    4.  
    5. Remove the dashboard side cover by gently pulling and turning to unfasten the clips.
    6.  
    7. While holding the glove box, remove the box stop from each side, then disconnect the lock from the damper.
    8.  
    9. Remove the glove ox bolts and the glove box.
    10.  
    11. Remove the shift lever assembly.
    12.  
    13. Remove the front door trim, lick panel and A-pillar trim from both sides.
    14.  
    15. Remove the cap from the front pillar corner trim. Unfasten the screw, slide the trim upward along the pillar and remove it. Remove the remaining clips from the body.
    16.  
    17. On the drivers side, remove the fuel/relay box nut and pull out the box.
    18.  
    19. Remove the steering column
    20.  
    21. On the passenger side remove the fuse/relay bolt and pull out the box.
    22.  
    23. Disconnect all electrical connections from the dashboard.
    24.  
    25. If equipped with a navigation system, pull back the carpet, remove the harness cushions and then pull out the GPS harness.
    26.  
    27. Remove all harness and connector clips.
    28.  
    29. Remove all the bolts and lift up on the dashboard to release the dashboard and steering hanger beam from the guide pins.
    30.  
    31. Remove the dashboard through the door.

  11. Remove the evaporator as follows:
    1. Disconnect the receiver and suction lines from the evaporator.
    2.  
    3. Remove the mounting nuts and plug the lines to avoid system contamination.
    4.  
    5. Remove the plastic brace and glove box frame.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the wire harness and evaporator temperature sensor connector.
    8.  
    9. Remove the self-tapping screws, the nuts and the evaporator.
    10.

  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Mounting bolts and the heater unit
     
    Self-tapping screws and the clamp, then pull the heater core from the case being careful not to bend the pipes

  15. Fill the cooling system

  17. Connect the battery cable.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Heater core in the case
     
    Clamp and the screws
     
    Heater unit and tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Evaporator in the reverse order of removal. Tighten all the retainers to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) .

  3. Install the dashboard in the reverse order of removal keeping in mind the following points:
    1. Make sure the dashboard is seated properly and that the wiring harness and steering hanger beam wire harness are not pinched.
    2.  
    3. Referring to the accompanying illustration, tighten bolts (A) to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Tighten all the other bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Apply thread lock to the B bolts before installation.
    4.  
    5. Ensure that all electrical connectors are properly connected.
    6.

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Mounting nut to the heater unit and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm)
     
    Heater hoses

  7. Connect the heater valve cable and adjust as follows:
    1. In the engine compartment, open the cable clamp (A), then disconnect the heater valve cable (B) from the valve arm (C).
    2.  
    3. Under the dashboard, disconnect the valve cable housing from the clamp (A) and the cable (B) from the mix control linkage (C).
    4.  
    5. Set the temperature control button to the MAX COOL position with the ignition switch in the on position.
    6.  
    7. Attach the valve cable (B) to the mix control linkage (C) as shown in the illustration, hold the end of the cable housing against the stop, then snap the cable housing into the clamp. Sin the engine compartment, turn the valve arm (C) to the fully closed position as shown in the accompanying illustration and hold it there. Attach the cable (B) to the vale arm and pull gently on the cable housing to take up the slack, then install the cable housing into the clamp (A).
