Adjustment



Major Adjustment

NOTE
This procedure should be done when you replace the brake shoes.

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported. Remove the rear wheels.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake, and back off the adjusting nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the access plug (A).
  6.  
  7. Turn up the ratchet teeth (B) or the adjuster assembly with a flat-tip screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock against the drum. Then back off ten clicks, and install the access plug.
  8.  
  9. Do the minor adjustment procedure.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheels.

    Fig. Remove the access plug (A). Turn up the ratchet teeth (B) or the adjuster assembly with a flat-tip screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock against the drum. Then back off ten clicks, and install the access plug.

Minor Adjustment
  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.
  4.  
  5. Back off the adjusting nut in half-turn increments, and check for proper adjustment (4 to 6 clicks) at a pedal force of 66 lbs. (294 N).

Break-In Procedure




NOTE
The brake lining surface break-in procedure should be performed when replacing shoes with new linings and/or new rear brake disc/drum.


CAUTION
Do this operation in a safe area.

  1. Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface.
  2.  
  3. Perform the major parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Perform the minor parking brake adjustment.
  6.  
  7. Press the parking brake pedal 2-4 clicks for 2001-02 models or 5 clicks for 2003-06 models.
  8.  
  9. Drive the vehicle for 1 / 4 mile (400 m) at no more than 31 mph (50 km/h).
  10.  
  11. Stop the vehicle, and release the parking brake for 5-10 minutes to allow the brake disc/drums to cool.
  12.  
  13. Repeat steps 4 through 6 three more times.
  14.  
  15. Check the parking brake pedal adjustment.
  16.  

Removal & Installation




CAUTION
Frequent inhalation of brake pad dust, regardless of material composition, could be hazardous to your health. Avoid breathing dust particles. Never use an air hose or brush to clean brake assemblies. Use an OHSA-approved vacuum cleaner.

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported. Remove the rear wheels.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake, and remove the rear brake caliper and brake disc/drum.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and remove the upper return springs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tension pins (A) by pushing and turning the retainers (B).

  9. Remove the connecting rod (A).

  11. Lower the parking brake shoe assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the forward brake shoe by removing the lower return spring (A) and adjuster assembly (B).

  15. Remove the rearward brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable (A) from the parking brake lever (B).

  17. Remove the U-clip, wave washer, and parking brake lever from the brake shoe.

To install:

  1. Apply Molykote® 44 MA grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin (A) of the rearward brake shoe (B).
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake lever (C) and wave washer (D) on the pivot pin, and secure with a new U-clip (E), noting the following:
    1. Install the wave washer with its convex side facing out.
    2.  
    3. Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the parking brake lever from coming out from the brake shoe.

  5. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  6.  
  7. Apply Molykote® 44 MA grease to the shoe ends and connecting rod ends (A), sliding surfaces (B), and opposite edges of the parking brake shoe (C) as shown. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.

  9. Install the tension pin (A), retainer spring (B), and retainer (C) of the rearward brake shoe (D). Make sure the tension pin does not contact the parking brake lever.

  11. Clean the threaded portions of clevis A, and coat the threads of clevis A with grease. Clean the sliding surface of clevis B, and coat the sliding surface of clevis B with grease. Install clevis A and B on the adjuster (C), and shorten clevis A by turning the adjuster.

  13. Reinstall the brake shoe adjuster assembly (D), and hook the lower return spring (E) on the parking brake shoes.

  15. Install the rod spring to the connecting rod first. Then install the connecting rod on the parking brake shoes.

  17. Install the tension pin (A), retainer spring (B), and retainer (C) of the forward brake shoe (D).

  19. Install the upper return springs.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear brake disc/drum and rear brake caliper.

  23. Adjust the parking brake.
