Ignition Coil

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the 11-pin IDI/ICM harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil and module assembly from the engine, as outlined in this section.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the housing to cover retaining screws, then remove the housing from the cover.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the coil harness connector(s).
  10.  
  11. Remove the coil(s), contact(s) and seal(s) from the cover.

To install:

  1. Install the coil(s) to the cover.
  2.  
  3. Attach the coil harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Install new seals to the housing.
  6.  
  7. Using petroleum jelly to retain the contacts, install the contacts to the housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the housing cover and secure using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Fit the spark plug boots and retainers to the housing.
  12.  
  13. Install the IDI assembly to the engine, as outlined in this section.
  14.  
  15. Attach the 11-pin harness connector.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

3.1L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Tag and detach the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the two screws retaining each coil to the Ignition Control Module (ICM), then remove the coil(s) from the module.

To install:

  1. Position the ignition coil(s) to the module, then install the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    NOTE
    Do not substitute other screws that what is used by the manufacture to attach the ignition coils.

  3. Attach the spark plug wires as tagged during removal.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

3.4L Engine
  1. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires. Make sure to the position from which the wires are removed.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 screws securing the ignition coil to the ignition control module.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2.  
  3. Install the attaching screws and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the spark plug wires.
  6.  

Testing



2.4L Engine
  1. Turn the ignition key OFF .
  2.  
  3. Unplug the coil pack from the vehicle harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminals with a Digital Volt Ohmmeter (DVOM).
  6.  
  7. If the reading is not greater than 10 kilohms, replace the coil.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall all components and reattach the negative battery cable.
  10.
