Ignition Control Module

Removal & Installation



2.2L Engine
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accelerator cable from the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accelerator cable bracket bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accelerator cable bracket.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the ignition control module (ICM) harness connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ICM retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ICM from the ignition coil housing.

To install:


NOTE
Make sure the interconnect and seal are lined up before module installation.

  1. Install the ignition control module in the ignition coil housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the ICM retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 13 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ICM harness connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the accelerator cable bracket.
  8.  
  9. Install the accelerator cable bracket bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the accelerator cable to the bracket.
  12.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coil and module assembly from the engine, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the housing-to-cover retaining screws, then remove the housing from the cover.
  6.  
  7. Detach the coil harness connector from the module.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the module-to-cover retaining screws, then remove the module from the cover.
    NOTE
    Do not wipe the grease from the module or coil, if the same module is to be replaced. If a new module is to be installed, spread the silicone grease (included in package) on the metal face of the new module and on the cover where the module seats. This grease is necessary for module cooling.

To install:

  1. Position the module to the cover, then secure using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the coil harness connector to the module.
  4.  
  5. Install the housing cover, then secure using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    NOTE
    When installing the housing to the cover, makes sure the ground strap stays in place.

  6.  
  7. Fit the spark plug boots and retainers to the housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the IDI assembly to the engine, as outlined in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

3.1L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disengage all electrical connectors at the ICM.
  4.  
  5. Tag and detach the spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the 6 screws securing the ignition coils to the ICM, then remove the coils from the module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition control module.

To install:

  1. Install the ICM, then position the coils to the module and fasten the 6 retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm).

  3. Attach the spark plug wires as tagged during removal.
  4.  
  5. Engage the electrical connections at the ICM.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

3.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect all the electrical connectors at the ignition control module.
  2.  
  3. Note position of spark plug wires for installation and disconnect the spark plug wires from ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws securing coil assemblies to ignition control module.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the coils from ignition control module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition control module from the bracket.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition control module on the bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the coils to ignition control module.
  4.  
  5. Install the screws and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the spark plug wires as noted during removal.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connectors to the ignition control module.
  10.
