Removal & Installation



2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine mount strut bracket
     
    Drive belt
     
    Lower then upper AC compressor bolts
     
    Oil pan bolts
     
    Oil pan

To install:

  1. Apply a 2mm bead of RTV sealant around the perimeter of the oil pan and the oil suction port. Do not over apply the RTV sealant.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    AC compressor bolts
     
    Engine mount bracket
     
    Drive belt
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the crankcase.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Flywheel/converter cover
     
    Right wheel
     
    Right wheel well splash shield
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air conditioning compressor lower bolts
     
    Transaxle-to-engine brace
     
    Engine mount strut bracket
     
    Radiator outlet pipe bolts
     
    Radiator outlet pipe from the oil pan
     
    Oil pan to the flywheel cover bolt and nut
     
    Flywheel cover stud for clearance
     
    Radiator outlet pipe from the lower radiator hose and oil pan
     
    Oil level sensor connector
     
    Oil pan
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Inspect the oil pan gasket; it is reusable if not damaged.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with the gasket. Torque the M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and the M6 bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Oil pan to the transaxle nut
     
    Oil level sensor connector
     
    Radiator outlet pipe to the lower radiator hose and oil pan
     
    Exhaust manifold brace
     
    Radiator outlet pipe. Torque the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
     
    Engine mount strut bracket. Torque the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Transaxle to the engine brace
     
    Air conditioning compressor lower bolts. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Right splash shield
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Flywheel/converter cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the crankcase.
  6.  
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.

3.1L & 3.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Evacuate the A/C system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Right splash shield
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Wheel Speed (WSS) sensor from the right subframe
     
    Right lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Right outer tie rod end
     
    A/C compressor without disconnecting the lines
     
    Evaporator-to-accumulator A/C line
     
    Flywheel cover
     
    Right side engine cradle bolts
     
    Crankshaft balancer
     
    Starter motor
     
    Oil pan

To install:

  1. Apply silicone sealer to the portion of the pan that contacts the rear of the block.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the flange bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the side bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Starter motor. Torque the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
     
    Flywheel cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft balancer. Torque the bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
     
    Engine cradle bolts. Torque the bolts to 84 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) plus an additional 120 degree turn.
     
    A/C compressor. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Evaporator-to-accumulator line
     
    Ball joint. Torque the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod end. Torque the nut to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     
    WSS electrical connector
     
    Wheel well splash shield
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the crankcase.
  6.  
  7. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    NOTE
    Whenever the vehicle subframe is removed or lowered, the wheel alignment should be checked.

  11. Check and/or adjust the front end alignment.
